Alarm clock
Sleep timer
15/30/45 min - then don't sweat it.

Probably did the quicky math on someone having their last meal at 7:00pm and breakfast at 7:00am. Pretty easy assumption and makes your 12 hours correct.

Then you have to deal with crappy radio music though. Plus, I have noise cancelling earbuds so it helps drown out other sounds like the air conditioner and my kids!

I had this problem last night too!
So I transcribed every permutation of exercises 84-94 in the Patterns for Jazz book into every key.
I was asleep in no-time!

No no, this is in your iPod. If you have newest gen, it is under extras-alarms-sleep timer-x time
Turns right off after x time.
Good feature, and I use it, but I use crappy headphones because I move at night. Also, I am worried earbuds will hurt my ear.

Do you snore? I had the "brain not shutting up" thing for years. When I started living with my girlfriend she quickly became annoyed by my snoring, so I went to a doctor to see what could be done. Few tests later and I have sleep apnea. I'm on a CPAP machine now. Solved the snoring, and the falling asleep problem. Once I hear/feel that air pumpin' into me, I'm asleep in minutes. And man do I feel good in the morning!!

It's a feature of your Ipod, as Redvan also mentioned.
I assume you're not sleeping nearly as well/deeply with music constantly playing.

My guess is that in the future this is going to be something that we find is woefully underdiagnosed.

My breathing/heart was stopping 64 times an hour for anywhere from a few seconds to over a minute. I'm 27 years old and the doctor told me I would have had my first major heart attack by the time I was 30.
It is like having a new life. I always thought I was lazy but turns out I was just dying a little every time I fell asleep. After a week on the machine I was lifting 50% more weight (per rep) at the gym. I can run 10k now. I'm happier, friendlier and much more successful in my daily activities.
Apnea is usually accompanied by snoring, but I encourage anyone who has trouble falling asleep to get tested. Your brain becomes aware that when you fall asleep it stops getting enough oxygen... the "not shutting up" is its way of keeping you awake and breathing.
I used to wake up and my girlfriend was sleeping on the couch because she hated the snoring. It was embarrassing so I went to the doctor to get a spray of something. Had noooo idea what a good move that was!

I can't believe no one else mentioned this til now, it's the one thing almost guarenteed to help me fall asleep during a doubt of sleeplessness.

Thank you! I knew it made sense but then brought up the amount of sleep so it threw me off.

I'm going to have to disagree with this. I think you should only take it when you really need to. Some stuides have shown that you should not take Melatonin for lengthy periods of times either. It's suggested you take it for nore more than 90 days, then take a break from it for 30 days. This is why I trake it when I feel I will really need it - nights I HAVE to get to sleep but know I won't be able to or am simply not tired at all.

My dad has one of these too... problem is he has the old school version and he hates it so he doesn't wear it like he should. However, they're expensive and his insurance is unwilling to pay for a new one.

My Dad found out he had apnea - he was always tired and short of breath. Snored like thunder. He does not use the machine every night like he should - it must be uncomfortable or a nuisance to use.

How old is his machine? Apparently the new ones are smaller and not as annoying.
