These poor people were innocent victims in the purest sense. Any attempt to put any of the blame on them for not escaping or trying to overpower their captor is kind of weird, if you ask me.

this 18 year old would probably be knocked down by a stiff breeze
It was already mentioned in something that i saw, that even though some of the kids were teenagers, they still look like kids....and were pretty frail..

article I read today said they had serious vitamin d deficiencies as well as posture issues from living in low ceiling rooms their entire life.

Plus if this is the only thing the kid knew, he wouldn't think it was abnormal that he was in there.....would he?

Apparently they also couldn't speak and police communicated with them using animal like noises.

This case honestly has kept me up the last two nights.

Seriously? 18 years of living in there and they haven't learned to speak? Didn't her mom communicate with the children at all when they were down there? I can't believe how this guy is going to get away with only up to 15-20 years in jail maximum. It sickens me how his daughter spent more time in his basement than he will spend in prison.

15 years... 20 years... 50 years... doesn't matter for someone that's already 73. He will die in prison. He won't be getting parole.

Even if he was 40, a 15 year sentence for this type of crime will likely be a death sentence - the other inmates know what he did.

The latest reports show they can speak. Also they had a television for some time. Apparently the five year old boy knew what a car was, because he had seen it on television.

There is talk in the article about how at adolesence the children would have wanted to rebel knowing an outside world.

Personally, I would have been happy for any kind of stimulus.

CTV is reporting that the father threatened to "gas" them if they tried to escape.

"An Austrian man who held his daughter captive for 24 years and fathered her seven children repeatedly warned his captives that they would be gassed if they tried to escape, a spokesman for investigators said Thursday."

Well, maybe they should just give him 24 years right off the bat in general population.

He'd be locked up in a small confined space and raped daily.

Turnabout is fair play?

Yup, definitely not a monster.

I've been following this story for the last week or so. 15 is the max anyone can get for murder. Even if they murder 5 people at the same time. They serve 15 years for each murder but served at the same time. Seeing how Europe is predominantly Catholics, they are a forgivable society. Hence, 15 years, we forgive you, move on. Stupid if you ask me.

I also read somewhere that Austrians really covet their privacy. It's a big deal there especially after WWII. That's why people seem to not notice weird things around them, like this ######bag, dragging in jugs of water and tons food in his back door in the middle of the night.

I can't imagine how this family could ever live a normal life, even though I am sure they are trying really hard. It's such a sad story. Most likely this guy is insane and will be tried that way. He won't be going to jail. He'll be the psych ward.

Done.

Quote:
Austrian Josef Fritzl, who kept his daughter in a cellar and fathered her seven children, has been convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment.
Fritzl, 73, was found guilty of all charges against him, including rape, incest, murder and enslavement.
He showed no obvious emotion at the verdict, telling the court that he accepted it and would not appeal.
The court ordered that Fritzl should serve his life sentence in a secure psychiatric facility.

Addressing the jury before the verdict, Fritzl said: "I regret from the bottom of my heart what I've done to my family."
"Unfortunately I cannot undo what I did. I can only try to limit the damage done as best as I can," he said.
You REGRET it? YOU BUILT A PRISON! YOU'D STILL BE DOING IT IF YOU HADN'T BEEN CAUGHT!

I don't believe a word of that.

I don't exactly know how the Austrian justice system works, but I must say that I am surprised to see him serving his sentence in a psychiatric facility. He admitted what he did was wrong (even though he most likely does not believe it to be true) and generally people are sent to psychiatric facilities when they are NCRD. I guess i need to read up on how the Austrian system works. It was probably why he changed to guilty pleads on all counts though.
