As is often the case, an analogous Mitch Hedberg quotation is apropos:
"13 is an unlucky number. Sometimes in buildings there is no 13th floor. But you people on the 14th floor, you really know what floor you're on. Jump out of the window and you will die sooner!"

I did a tiny bit of research on this, (not a ton, no expert here) but after a little digging I was more inclined to believe that like many early beliefs that took into account the cycles of the earth and the birth and death cycle, this calendar is cyclic. Doesn't mean the word ENDS on Dec 21, 2012 just that the calendar restarts again. And since everything technically orbits, why couldn't that be true?
However, there are enough doomsday nuts and enough world tension out there that someone or some country COULD precipitate a global catastrophe. We all know there are many fundamentalist religions on both sides of the world that are looking forward to doomsday and we all know that these religions are gaining more and more political power.
NOTHing is set in stone, but we as humans LOVE a self fulfilling prophecy.
Time will tell.

Here is a link to a teaser trailer for 2012 which comes out next year. The visual is fairly powerful and I like the tone set by the music. Of course it is directed by Roland Emmerlich (Independance Day and The Day After Tomorrow) so it may very well be all flash and no substance but still looks like a fun movie.

That's the thing...
Why does the Mayan calender end then? Simple... it's because Mayan civilization was destroyed and their calender system became obselete. When the time would have come to write a new calender (likely a few decades before 2012), someone would have started work on it.
Do people really think that Mayans would have created an infinite calender? Not to be rude, but western civilization hasn't even done that and the Mayans were effectively a stone-age civilization when they were conquered.
As for real doomsday predicitions, does anyone know if it is true that there is a huge meteor heading towards the Earth due to hit in about 800 years? It supposedly has a 4% chance of hitting the planet (which in astronomical terms, is a pretty good chance).

Pfft. As if that matters, we have Ben Affleck and Steve Buscemi to save us.

That was actually a really cool effect with the mountains there. As far as trailers go that was pretty cool. Shame Emmerlich has done absolutely nothing in his career to give me confidence that the movie will be any good.
