The dinner & a movie thing is so overdone and unoriginal. You want to stand out to the rest of the fools she dates. You want to show her that you're someone she can have fun with. Apart from confidence women love a guy can make them laugh. Take her bowling, mini golf, laser tag (as someone mentioned already), wine tastings (there's one tonight at the wine store in Banker's Hall), anything that will make this date & you stand out in her mind. Wait until you're in a relationship and out of ideas to do the old dinner & a movie thing. Oh, and whatever you do...don't do something where you're spending a crap load of money because that will make you look like someone who needs to buy approval.
Weird, I have the exact opposite frame of mind. Every first date I've had has been pretty simple. A movie, a walk, drinks. I've had reasonable success with the ladies, and have been in a few long-term relationships (including now).
I think you'll be confident if you are yourself and do something you're comfortable with. You don't need to 'wow' her... you alone are enough to 'wow' her. Doing something simple where you can just chat allows you both to be the focus of attention... and then you can shine! After a few dates and you've gotten to know each other pretty well, that's when you start to look for more unique and creative dates.
I do agree about not spending too much money though. No point being ostentatious...

I agree. When a guy is trying to wow me I feel uncomfortable and I tell him to relax. I've even paid for the first date before

I disagree - you have to establish yourself as different from all the other dime-a-dozen bozos she's dated before, especially if you're trying to leave her with a lasting impression wanting more. Big johnson jokes aside, you've got to come up with something original that fits your persona to make the best impression...And always, ALWAYS listen to what she says, rather than just hear her talking. Soak in EVERYTHING she says on the first date so you can gauge her personality type even better for the second date.
Oh, and for a few laughs, check out this Talk show host Tom Leykis' "TENETS OF LEYKIS", the set of rules males should follow in order to score with women. It's rather crude, but good for a few laughs, and even has some reasonable points that are worth considering...
Take her to Pho-kim for some authentic vietnamese beef noodle. After dinner, you guys can go strolling on 16 Ave. If possible, run maniacally across the road avoiding oncoming traffic. Encourage her to do the same. Head into Bubblemania and buy her bubble tea, then laugh about the bubbles tickling your mouth. Once you've had your fill of food and drink, head to the 7-11 gas station and playfight with gasoline. End your night by running across the road again.

What I was referring to standing out is not doing something extraordinary. It's to simply NOT do what every other guy out there does when they're just out of ideas, which is the dinner & a movie. And I completely agree with doing something which stimulates conversation. Standing out doesn't mean going out of your way to do something ridiculously out of the norm, to me it just means not being overly simplistic & boring. A simple meeting out for drinks is a good way to either start of finish a first date.
While you are plowing her make sure you make a sex tape because that is the craze now a days, maybe AnthonyCook would edit it for you.. some type of highlight reel, he has done good work in the past.
HDF could come up with a table of contents graphic for us.
Location: In my office, at the Ministry of Awesome!
Exp:
You could always drive her out to a deserted field, and when she asks what you're doing there tell her that you're gonna hunt her for sport.
Stick to this story for as long as you can, and then once you've got her really believing that you're some sort of crazy, tell her you were just kidding, you won't hunt her for sport.......if she sleeps with you.
