Which is why the best battle rappers do a lot more than just tell someone how much they suck or how gay they are.

There is no pressure like the pressure of a real battle; be-bop be-damned.

WTF are you talking about?

Be-bop battles were going on for about 40 years before hip-hop battles began even in the underground.

There is not a single hip-hop artist who can even be compared to the genius of the jazz masters. Mastering an instrument like sax or trumpet, a hugely complex system of music theroy, and the lifestyle of the jazz musician is the stuff of legend.

Hip-hop is the stuff of MTV.

Can't get a music degree in hip-hop. The closest thing would be electronic music production, with hip-hop being the easiest and simplest form.

EDIT: Also, hip-hop would not exist if not for Jazz. Especially hip-hop, because musical style and evolution aside, Jazz is SO HEAVILY SAMPLED FOR LOOPS by hip-hop, moreso than any other genre by a mile!

You know I'm one of these old farts who could never understand the appeal of rap. Most of this dislike is because of the language and the anger and the hate being spouted but I can see the possibilities it can have and I think I understand where it's music roots came from.

This video and the one linked by Fotze is actually pretty good, thanks.

I hate rap, but think battles are kinda cool. Well, the concept anyway.

I'm not going to rip on Jazz, because I appreciate (to a certain extent) the form and recognize its importance in the history of music. But I stand by my assertion that an MC faces more pressure in a battle than a jazz instrumentalist ever did.

And hip-hop is far from the simplest form of electronic music, that title goes to our good friend progressive trance.

I listen to every thing from Ella Fitzgerald to Frederic Chopin... AC/DC to 2Pac... I've never been the type to ridicule other genres with questions like, "That's music??". To each their own I think... and I definitely don't know nearly enough about music to be a judge on things like the skill level required to be involved in the various genres...
