I don't think it's careless to expect people to not to walk away with anything that isn't chained down.

I just pee on all of my valuables, sort of a way of marking my territory. Make sure you're neighbours see you do this. I also spit on my food, no more of those people who "just want one onion ring!".
The only thing I've had stolen from me is the movie Batman Begins.

OMG, did I ever say that there is a place in the world that is free from crime? No. There are places however where it is MUCH less prevelant.

Is it though?? Sounds pretty damn comparible. One person disrupting your life.. yes they are "just" extenstion cords but the premise is the same. Did you deserve to be woken up by an a-hole?
Did this jolinar fella deserve to have property of his stolen?
Nope and nope

I find it quite funny that of all people who'd complain about crime, it comes from a poster in the LE field...did you ever stop to think that if everyone behaved like good farmers like your neighbours growing up, you'd be out of a job?
funnies aside I do feel for you, attached garages FTW.

I too had a extension cord stolen from me, figured it was cheaper to occasionally buy a new one then move... does that make me a bad person?

I will tell you what....I would be happy to go into a different field of work if we could achive the possibility of no crime.
One day I will have a garage.

? Who said anything about being a bad person if they replaced their extension cord?
And if you read the entire thread you would see that someone who stole my extension cord was not THE reason that I am moving.

-obligatory joke-
I'm just borrowing them, I'm testing my secret design for an electric car and I wanted to take it out on the Deerfoot. You would not BELIEVE how long it took me to assemble ten thousand of those things...
-joke's over-
Stealing petty stuff like this is so annoying because at least if they steal something worth some money, you can kind of understand the thinking behind it, as in, "I'm a parasite on society therefore I'm going to steal stuff and sell it". Obviously someone stealing something like this is taking it for their own use, which just shows they are not only a useless parasite, but also small-minded and dumber than a Carrot Top jokebook.
It's like when someone broke my car window last year to steal the $1.17 in change inside - at least have the courtesy to take the freakin' stereo so your dumb junkie ass doesn't need to break into another 40 cars to be able to afford your fix. See, if they'd stolen your car, you wouldn't even care about the cords, would you?

Lol. I hear that. I had my truck broken into and all they stole was the faceplace to my $40 Canadian Tire El Cheapo CD player.
Really? Just the faceplate? Crap. That was annoying more than anything.

I had this happen to me three times near the University. In total the thieves probably got $4.00 as I keep nothing else in my car. Paying to replace the window each time stings.

I had this happen to me once, so I bought a lockable receptacle cover. That did the trick.

Wow, thanks for putting words in my mouth, hayseed. I didn't say anyone deserved to have anything stolen. My point is that there are thieves and general arseholes everywhere and if you think that they don't exist or that you won't encounter them then you are truly deluded. Sh*t happens but if you make it easy for it to happen by not taking any preventative measures then you may as well just paint a giant bullseye on yourself. The best way to avoid being a target is to stay out of the crosshairs.

Joined this thread kinda late and read it through. To sum things up:
1) The guy had his extension cords stolen. That sucks.
2) I am sure he knows crime isn't just here but in all places.
3) By coincidence, some have some extension cords for sale.
4) Some agree, getting s$#t stolen sucks.
5) There are some missing garden hoses.
6) Reaper argues to here himself talk (type) and in general treats people like garbage.

I know the feeling. After awhile you just learn to leave your doors unlocked so at least they won't smash the window anymore.
