Like I said before, if I was in my truck doing 30 km/h under the limit I could easily be pulled over by the cops for going too slow and impeding traffic. Why should cyclists play by a different set of rules?
|
The rules are that cyclists are allowed on that road. And again, that whole 5 seconds out of your day to switch to the next lane is going to ruin your day?

it's a pretty piss poor driver that would cause a ten car pileup because he wasn't paying attention to the road ahead of him. How do you deal with other such nuisances, like an emergency vehicle parked on the side of the road? Do you lock up your brakes and cause an accident? Or do you slow down and get around them safely?

Agreed. Or worse you have a stop sign, the other direction doesn't and someone stops to let you go. It's usually unnerving because you don't know if the other lane is going to stop. I've often wished I had a sign I could pull out saying "I have the stop sign, you don't."

Problem is there are no bikepaths in the city. it's a pathway system which is shared by bikers, bladers, runners, strollers, grandmas, and everything in between. It's friggen scary riding your bike on the path within a km or two of Eau Claire. It's like the cyclist to you on a car - never sure what's going to happen. Worst are the bladers just because of leg action, they take up a bunch of room....actually they aren't the worst, the running classes are the worst because they don't run in single file and getting around them is super tough.
Every year the city does a bicycle survey and every year I put down the need for dedicated bike lines. Lots of European cities have a bike lane and a pedestrian lane.

There are a couple of people who do, but they seem to try and stick mainly to the sidewalks.

Well, some cyclists are like that. But no one posting on this board would be dumb enough to subscribe to that particular view
|
I never debated the presense of cyclist on the road with cars, but they should obey the same traffic rules that cars do and not bob and weave through traffic because they are more vulnerable out there.

Which is hilarious, when you think about it. Cyclists - and there are plenty of a-holes on pedals - whine about how cars need to share the road with them, but these same whiners won't share the paths with others because they have to slow down for various reasons.
The hypocricy of those cyclists doesn't really help the cause of the pedallers.
Speaking of idiots on a bike, I nearly hit a ###### at the Chinook station parking lot because he figured he had the right to weave all over the road. I simply kept right, and expecting him to be a moron, I was almost stopped when he nearly pedaled right into my hood. I gave the idiot the finger and continued on with my day, but there really are a ton of idiot cyclists trying to get themselves killed.

You know you don't have argument when all you're essentially saying is "rules are rules - follow them blindly". I'm saying the laws are stupid and should be changed.
How is riding on the sidewalk going to ruin your day? The reason cars have to share the road is because cyclists whined about the very same things about sharing the road with walkers. At least in those cases an accident meant a couple bumps and bruises...

Are you sure about this? I've always thought that cyclists were required to use roads as opposed to the sidewalk for the safety of pedestrians.
If it was the other way around, shouldn't bikes be allowed on the sidewalks?

That's awesome.
I hate the drivers in this city. Everyone is in such a hurry and get pissed when they get stuck in traffic. Don't leave your house so late to get to where ever you're saving lives(which is the only excuse to drive like an idiot) and give yourself time to spare. Cyclist have as much right as the next person to be on the road and they're not all doing it for environmental reasons. Not everyone in this city can afford these d!ck enhancers that we have dominating our roads.

From what I've seen 3/4 of cyclists have a perfectly good Subaru Forester sitting at home.. They just chose to ride to work..

Is that just in your neighborhood? Or have you actually done some research on this?

LOL. I was asking because stating something 3/4 makes it seem like you actually know what you're talking about.

That must be an exception
I was out at elbow falls last summer, there were 4 or 5 foresters in a row on the side of the road with a cyclist on the end loading up a mitsubishi, I yelled at him wondering where his subaru was..? He laughed and said its on order..
