Showboating to the rest of the players on the ice is not going to win you any friends. More than likely they'll exclude you from any future pickup games.

I suppose I should clarify that I usually go to the rink late at night when all the competitive kids are there.

And let's be honest, I'm not going to let one of the worse players take the puck from me when There are 5 other guys on his team that easily can... I want my team to have possession, not them.

It's different if you go in the middle of the day.

I don't know where you're playing, but I go at night too and its still about having fun and not winning.

It's not about winning then either. But for most of us having fun means putting on some nice moves and making some nice plays (offensively and defensively). This translates into us trying to keep possession, opposed to just accidently on purpose losing it to someone.

Like I said, different when the kiddies are out. I'll edit my first post...

C'mon you guys, you have to play shinny as hard as you can, you never know when the New York Rangers and Sports Illustrated are going to be skulking around.

I go 7-9:30 pm which is why I threw that in there.

As I said are there points on the line? Is it a competition? Spread it around.

I mean, I agree it's fun to try and attempt a coast to coast rush now and then, but if you're there 50% of the time doing it, you look like a tool to everyone there.

exactly. I can't stand playing when there is a guy like that, wether he is on my team or not.
Here is why when
He is on my team: I'm there to play, pass me the damn puck, I don't care if you played double 'A' midget. You're not Crosby, and you can't move like him.
If he's against me: I actually mind as much because I am very solid defensively and I'm tough to beat if only for the length of my stick. But when you do deke around me odds are you came in close enough where I would knock you on your back or into the boards in a real game, quit your celebrating and get off my lawn!

What's the best is when someone goes coast to coast and ends up totally missing the net or fanning on a shot. AHAHAHA

Both points are so true... The 2nd, I play strong positional D and in order to get around me you pretty much have to go through me, at that point I just let them go by... Which kind of defeats the purpose.

Haha those guys are always like 14-16 year olds, wearin their AAA Bantam sweatsuits(Calgary Buffs or Royals in my neck o the woods) and big, afro-ey hockey hair, usually dyed or streaked blonde, and thered always be like two or three of em. Those guys are the best, their egos are so massive that you can almost see it radiating off of them. I always laugh when they show up and do their best Pavel Bure, end-to-end rush impression.

I don't suppose there are any 24 hr. rinks around Calgary this winter? I recall one winter - maybe an Olympic year? - there were several. Nothing beats a game of 3 am shinny (and good bet there aren't too many showboaters out at that time, unless they wanna make sure they cover all their bases).

I played up till 1 a.m. a few times last year and also once this year at the Olympic plaza. No, hockey is not allowed there, but the general public leave around 11:30 p.m. and some hockey kids come out that I play/ed some hockey with.

Anyone live Central? I live in Ramsay and there's a covered rink up about 5 minutes away from me. It's covered, and of course central (close to DT, Chinook, hell even Forest Lawn wouldnt be much of a drive) and might be a good locale if anyone wants to set up a game. That way people from North and South can go. And I can walk over and drink beer!

i play at the Tuscany Club a lot and there are a few jerks that come out and need to make up for their small penises by showing that they can beat a bunch of 15-50 years olds at shinny by skating up and down the ice 50 times while doing denis savard style spin o ramas.

every once and a while i "accidentally" lay some lumber on their shins or put them into the boards a lot harder than necessary.

if its only sticks and gloves with no helmets and there are intermediate players out there then keep the Gretzky impressions to yourself.

the fun in shinny is to make a bunch of nice plays as a team(ie. lots of passing). its a good opportunity to meet fellow hockey fans from around the community and share our love of the game.

to me jerks who show their amazingness are no different than if i dropped the gloves and beat the piss out of someone on the other team in a shinny game with my team down 2-0 in an effort to spark the team.

I've played there a few times. I've got a few friends over there who play there quite a bit, too. One was just there last week and said the ice was really good, so I'll probably drag myself into a game eventually.

As far as rules go, here's the ones we usually play by:

1) No slapshots. Ever.

2) Wristshots are okay so long as the goalie has the proper equipment, you aren't whipping them into a crowd, and you're not 3 feet out from the crease. If the guy is decked out in road hockey gear, then the puck shouldn't leave the ice, unless it's being cleared, passed or dumped in.

3) Once the goalie has the puck, it's his puck. Usually we let him play it to the first player on his team to show up and claim it.

4) Once your team scores a goal, the puck goes to the other team and they have until the center redline with impunity. After that, they're fair game.

5) Fighting for pucks is fine, but no stick work on skates or bodies, and no rough stuff.

6) No hitting, unless the guy is running his mouth.

7) Whoever shoots the puck over the boards has to go and get it. Furthermore, once the puck has been shot over the boards, the puck goes to the opposing team.

8) If you've been out there for more than 15 minutes, get off and let one of the subs play - but only if theres more than 5 people on your team.

9) Leave the cherry picking to the kids 12 and under. Seriously.

Then join a competitive league if you're worried about worse players taking the puck from you. Most don't make a big hubbabaloo over who has possesion of the puck.

When I see these kids come on, I go straight to defense and shut them down every time. So much fun. One time one of them go so frusterated with me, he took a run at me....he lost.

Funny how some of you can justify taking a guy out or accidently slashing him just because he doesn't pass as much as another guy. Real stand-up.

If I'm feeling it, I'm going to put the effort in, even if it is just outdoor shinny. Sorry if you don't like someone skating circles around you.
