What drives me more up the wall is when you have a real effective identity that is relatively simple and peopel claim they could have designe that. "Well it's just a swoosh - anyone could do that!".
I can see why that would drive you and any graphic designers nuts. It's the same with innovations in engineering--valuable inventions that seem obvious and simplistic after the fact are actually hard to come up with in the first place. I don't think you can put claims about the London logo in the same category, though. It will never be iconic. It will be forgotten in 10 years (hey, can you remember the logo for the Sydney games?). Even in the present, it has no aesthetic appeal to the majority of people.
There are very few iconic logos, and a whole whack of disposable ones in this world. It takes time to reach iconic status, and an olympic logo (other than the rings) will never be around long enough to do that.
For something to garner as much immediate, negative reaction as the London logo has, there's a lot more going on than the basic "I could have done that" jealousy that you have for other things (e.g. the swoosh).
Edit: Oh and if you want to know how to post those images in there, just right click on the image and scroll down to properties…a little window should pop up…copy the URL address into the insert image link
ROFL. Someone at the BBC had to know what that was. The guy who put the video together is probably a pretty smart computer guy and probably browses forums...he had to know. LOL.
Don't forget the cowboy boots you can see in there too! (and that it is made up almost exclusively of rings.)
I'll always have a soft-spot for the Calgary one but the "cowboy boot" angle is pretty weak. More like "the boots Rod Stewart wore on the Hot Legs Tour" than "cowboy boots".

Ever since I read a forum a couple days ago where they thought it looked like Lisa Simpson about to preform a lewd act, I haven't been able to look at it.

The article says people think it's be outdated by 2012 or looks too futuristic... to me, it looks too 90s.
I think it looks 80's, you think it looks 90's, some people think it looks too current (aka: soon to be dated) or too futuristic. That thing is timeless.
I'm not a big fan either, but it is growing on me, as much as an Olympic logo can grow on a guy. I don't really care, so it can't grow much.
The outrage over the cost is kind of funny though. The London Olympics are going to cost billions and this thing cost 400 grand. People will bitch endlessly about the logo now but when some stadium goes over budget by a couple hundred million pounds it won't make many waves.
