less sleep is better(around 5-6 hours) than say 8-9. Too much sleep is not good and leaves you tired until you sleep again.

That depends entirely on the person, but over 8 hours, or under 6 (if I remember right) on a regular basis for a long period of time, has been correlated with poorer health. I believe that 7 or 8 hours is generally reccommended for adults (not including seniors). Obviously, though, it's necessary to get less sleep sometimes - if you have young kids, for example.
As for myself, I try my hardest to always get 8 hours of sleep.
As a student, I'm usually in bed by 1AM, and up at 9AM. On weekends, I get up sometime around 9-10:30 AM, regardless of when I went to bed. (If I feel a bit groggy on the weekend, it's not a big deal).
When I'm working, I'm usually in bed by 10:30 and up at 6:30.
I notice a huge difference if I change how long I sleep for, and can't stand the feeling of either too much or too little sleep.
