This seems to be the path Mel Gibson is taking. Everyone got really mad at him when it happened, but now Hollywood has moved on. He is coming out a another movie. Guess we'll have to wait and see if people are actually mad and won't see it (doubt it). So far I can't really tell of any fallout for Mel Gibson.

Difference is Gibson is a huge star, Richards career was dead before this...even if he follows the above formula, why would another comedy club owner ever want him to perform in their club?

No Kidding.
Not to mention that in the example hah has cited, SBC wasn't descriminating against them or attacking them to their knowledge at all... He used their being Jewish to cause Borat to become afraid of them, not hostile toward them.
They probably had little inclination about what Cohen was doing, and more likely just thought he was a really eccentric, weird guy.

Do you know what was being said to him? Where you there? Do you know for a FACT that racial or derogatory terms where not thrown at him while he was trying to do his job, before he went off on his rant?
Do 2 wrongs make a right? But in the heat of the moment, people are bound to be irrational. Hell it happens here all the time.

I think most of the general public actually gets it. People aren't laughing at the racism because they think racism is funny, they are laughing at a guy making fun of racists.
And even if you don't get it, Borat is still a character in a movie. He's not a real person. Richards is. If that crazy rant was part of a script or something, you'd have a comparison -- but probably wouldn't bother because it would be, you know, fiction.

You are upset with Kramer but Borat is ok?

I think the Borat character is genius! His character is racist, sexist etc. In the movie he talks with people and reveals that they are acutally racist and sexist, and not playing a character. When he goes to the rodeo, that cowboy he interview is racist, college guys in the camper are sexist.
At face value the movie is just making fun of this racist and sexist who is out of place in America. But really the movie is pointing out how racist and sexist American is.

In short yes.
There are characters that are murders, characters that are rapists, characters that are child molesters.
So yes, racist characters are ok.

Do us all a favour and dont talk about things you cleary dont understand. If you draw any parallel between the movie "Borat" and Richards racist rant then I think you should maybe just stay out of these kind of threads because your viewpoint is not only silly but also erroneous in every sense of the word.

It's not Kramer dude, its Michael Richards - a real person, making real comments in real life. Not a character making fictional comments.

I am sorry but I cannot accept this as justification for his actions, just because someone is making racist and derogatory statements does not give someone else the right to say it back, I don’t care how “heat of the moment is it” imagine the worst thing that someone could say to you, would it be ok for them to say it in the heat of the moment?

How do you know?
He was up on a stage "entertaining". People may have paid to see his performance.
I'm not saying Richards is right. I'm saying he was doing similar things that the Borat character does.

OMFG. Why don't you get this. Borat = not real person. Micheal Richards = Real person.
The person that plays Borat IS A JEW. Micheal Richards IS NOT BLACK.
How can you find any similarities here?

So it is your contention that what we are seeing in that link is a comedic performance? I want to be clear that's what you believe?

both of these guys should be ashamed. Richards for starting the racist remarks, and the black guy for returning them right back.

This is certainly racist. Sure there's a way someone could think of using ****** in jest (not really funny when used by a white person since they lost the right to say it) but this is clearly racism. He says "Throw them out! They're ******s! They're ******s! They're ******s!"
Clearly racism.
As for Borat, I view that as self deprication not racism. The character is anti-semite, but the actor IS a semite.

I did not see the entire "show" just the clip on the internet. Maybe he was playing a "character" at the time of the clip.

I haven't seen the video (blocked at work) but I do agree that it is odd that part hasn't been mentioned by anybody but you.
My thought; I wonder if Richards was trying to be funny, and due to some influence (alcohol or something) it just came out horribly wrong. I have been insulted by stand up comedians before; and I laughed along because that was part of the guy's act.
Not saying this excuses him; but I wonder if the comments were not coming from his heart.

Honestly dude are you that thick that you cant see a 180 degree difference in the two? Its like comparing the nutrional quality of an apple to that of a chocolate bar.
For the last time I will try and explain this.......Borat is a FICTIONAL charcter who portrayed SEEMINGLY racist views to expose the true sterotypes existing in America(say have you ever watched Ali g charcter hmmmmm)
Richards is a comic who got mad and let off a string of RACIAL SLURS, directed towards the specific black people who ****ed him off.
What planet do you live on to make this comparison?
