Doesn't mean that city is necessarily bad, like Seattle has tons of suicides just because it's raining all the time there.
And Nunvat, the Northwest Territories, and the Yukon have super high suicide rates compared to the rest of Canada. People are really influenced by their surroundings.

I see your point but I don't
totally agree. Maybe living in a place like Seattle or up north may add to a persons depression but I really don't think that is what would push someone over the edge to kill themselves (deeper issues are already there for someone to do that - not the fact they live in a certain place). I have lost a loved one to suicide and I don't think it is something to be taken lightly. It was a smart *** comment basically saying that the suicide rate would be higher in Edmonton just b/c it's Edmonton and why would anyone want to live there, as it would just be better to off yourself than live there (here). That's what I got out of it and I thought it was offensive. Maybe I'm sensitive right now as it hasn't even been a year that I've been dealing with this loss but suicide isn't so much about where you live and more to do with deeper, emotional/psychological issues.
Besides if I wanted to be a smart ***, the same could be said for Calgary. Esthetically I really don't see THAT much of a difference between the two cities and for the life of me I can't understand the inferiority complex that comes from the citizens of Calgary aimed at Edmonton. Maybe I'm naive but until a few years ago I didn't realize the how deep the rivalry was between the two cities, other than the hockey/football rivalry of course, b/c I NEVER hear anybody here in Edmonton talking about Calgary - I really don't think anybody cares. Yet, it's not uncommon to hear people from Calgary bashing Edmonton all the time .. it get's tiring. The crime rate may be higher and I don't have an answer as to why but it's not like the exact things that happen in Edmonton don't happen in Calgary. My husband spent some time in the greater LA area doing humanitarian service many years ago and he laughs at people who say it is so bad here. When he was there, he was in an area where a family of tourists bodies were found stuffed in an old mattress after they had been robbed and killed (they took a wrong turn apparently) .. go there and you'll quickly change your mind I'm sure .. the cities in Alberta will seem like paradise.
