As previously mentioned, several times. NO.
On an average domestic flight you spend about 1h 30mins in airports alone, plus flight time, plus driving from Leduc to Edmonton time.
HOZ, your airport is rediculous. They should call it the Red Deer International airport. Plus the fact that A good chunk of Edmontonians have to hop through Calgary to get to alot of international destinations anyways.

Give it a rest. It takes 20 minutes to get downtown from the airport. Only a Calgarian in his donkey-cart takes 40 minutes.
20 minutes is hardly an inconvenience considering that most of the world's airports are farther (timewise and distance) from their core.
Tokyoites must take a train for an hour to get to their main international airport (Narita)
New Yorkers are hardly near either of their two either. Most New Yorkers fret over which airport they will come in to because landing at the wrong one will add 2 hours onto their travel.
|
Lets see you get from downtown to the airport in 20 minutes. Have you been to your airport? I'm sure it could be done if you were driving 140km all the way there. But then your jackass would die once you got there. :P

It is true. COWvllians can't measure, drive, or count. They certainly can't drive their F-donkey faster than 30K...obviously. That garsh darn train is needed!!!!!!
Yes...lets miss the point.
20 minutes to downtown....that is as long as it takes......faster than Calgary's port on a slack day on Dearfoot. Faster than.....New York, Tokyo, Osaka, HongKong, London (England), and hole whack of others....
Yes it is WAY out there....but the time to get to where you want to go is 20 minutes.

there should be a train from nisku to edmonton downtown, especially after the muni gets downsized or torn up.
i know people that depend on that airport and they are not happy with what may happen soon.
a high-speeder to fort mac should be on the horizon.
calgary and edmonton are too close to bother with a train in my opinion, and there's too much in between, farms, ranches, roads, etc.
between fort mac and edmonton there are large patches of burned-out forest, fallow fields, and basic nothingness.
that is where a train should be built, with guaranteed passengers (think of all the crew buses on weekends) and a lot less complications.

I can't believe you keep comparing Edmonton's airport drive to New York, Tokyo, Osaka, HongKong, London (England) etc. and how much quicker it is compared to those cities. I've got news for you - Edmonton isn't even close to comparing itself to any of those cities.... Compare yourself to Winnipeg maybe.
As for your purported 20 minute drive... it's heavily dependent on traffic. Perhaps it's the rooftop balloon ads up and down Gateway / Calgary Trail that divert people attentions that every light is a red light. I left at 4:30 2 weeks ago and with the traffic, I was lucky to get from the MacDonald to Whyte in 15 minutes.
Want an interesting read comparing Calgary's two Airports?
YEG Sucks
Lots of interesting facts that also show how Edmonton really blew it in the last 20-30 years and fell behind Calgary. Interesting to see how far Edmonton is behind in income levels.
I also got a kick out of this petition to try and get Lufthansa to fly from Nisku to Frankfurt:
Ich bin ein Mullet
Smells like the usual "Calgary's got one we should too" whine....

My point isnt' even how long it is to get the Edm airport. It's just how insanely far they built it from the city centre.

Funny how people start complaining about a few minutes that could be saved here and there. My god people, we have it good. We have a great highway system that pretty much let's you go anywhere, and all paved. Sure beats saskatchewan/manitoba/NW ontario.
If people are going to complain about a few minutes, would a star trek transporter make them happy?
How many bullet trains do the Americans have? Not many, and I think they would need it a lot more. There's the Acela on the east coast, but there's a huge difference there. They have a huge population which can support the train. Even then they still had problems with it. We just don't have the population to justify it. It's not a matter of if people will be willing to pay... I'm sure they woud be... but it just won't work. Yet.

Meatball... clever indeed aren't we!
Tell me, when you compare your "time of travel" in your first sentence, isn't it in relative terms to...hold it..... other cities?
"Faster than.....New York, Tokyo, Osaka, HongKong, London (England), and hole whack of others...."
Your comparison of TIME OF TRAVEL is flawed using the above cities as they have what? about 8 MILLION more people than Edmonton? Of course Edmonton has a quicker downtown to airport travel time!
Your bizarre use of those cities in your comparison of travel time is what I was getting after.... :wwf:
BlackArcher: You're right - Spending 3.5 billion to save 30 minutes or so doesn't make sense. We've also forgot about things like the smaller 8 seat airplanes that can land at the puny Muni airport in "downtown" Edmonton. Capital Air used to take off from the Esso Avitat saving you a lot in security checks (They didn't have any at one point) and parking and it takes you straight to the Muni.
Me I just try and avoid going to Edmonton. It's nice to have Junior staff to have and send to Edmonton to go in your place...

You are the one complaining about a 20 minute commute. Whereas if you went on a business trip, something I rather doubt you really have done, to a larger centre your commute is far longer.
The commute from Calgary's airport to downtown Calgary is slightly shorter. As a....ehem businessman I am not sure what your problem is. It seems to me this is more of a petty 'I don't like Edmonton because they kick our asses at everything' Edmonton bash.

Well since you asked...I'm a management consultant and have worked for a Big 4 consulting firm serving Fortune 500 / ROB 100 corporations. Edmonton was unfortunately deemed to be "small market" by our NY/Toronto Overlords and as such I got stuck going up there to service our remaining clients since we liquidated everyone in our field office in Edmonton. Usually we had to drive, hence my interest in this thread.
You think I haven't been on a longer business trip to major cities? I'm Aeroplan Elite - how do you like dem apples? (thankfully those points didn't come from Edmonton...)
What division of Cheemo are you with again? :P
----
The other thing that's become quite popular now is fractional aircraft ownership, and that'll eat away a smaller portion of the upper end corporate travellers. A lot of your larger oil field service companies have access to these.... Avia currently services the company I work for now and they fly these little babies, the Piaggo P-180.

On the Fort MacMurray rail line - it will cost $3 billion to build, and has an effective life of less than 50 years. When the oil runs out, that rail line would become useless.
Really, the government, if it wants to spend $3 billion on rail transit, it would be better off completing the LRT systems in both Calgary and Edmonton. That would make the environmentalists happy, as well as serve an actual need in both cities.
Spending billions because we can on a train to nowhere would be an effective way to thumb our noses at the rest of the country, but it is money that could be far better spent.
As for the drive time to Leduc International, on an average weekday, it often takes me 20 minutes just to get from 39th avenue to the airport exit because of all of the mulletheads who can't figure out what the "90" and "110" signs on Calgary Trail mean. The only possible way one could go from Edmonton downtown to Leduc Int'l in 20 minutes is at 3AM running every light.

Leduc International to downtown Edmonton is 30.6km according to my gps. That's the shortest route. To make it in 20 min, the avg speed would have to be 60km/h. That would mean no stop lights, no waiting for turns, pretty much everything perfect.

Does this Fortune 500 company have any relation to Enron?
So you are a big AEROPLAN ELITE type...travelled to NY and the big TO....and you are complaining about the Edmonton commute from YEG????

You're right. 20.8 km to 34ave. Which is 11 minutes @ 110 km/h. Leaves 9.8 km and 8.65 minutes to make it in 20.
Which means you have to travel from 34th to downtown with an average speed of 68km/h. Anyone been able to do that speed?

And yes, people do tend to travel less than 70 km/h in cities.
