Robert Johnson sure was something back in the twenties.
Eric Johnson (absolutely no relation) is one of my favorites just for his musicianship and ability.
But I've always said that Prince may not be the world's best guitarist but he sure is up there and one of the most underappreciated and underrated ones out there. His acoustic material is really great although almost impossible to ever come across as he'll only ever play it live.

Lee Ronaldo and Thurston Moore.
I'm also a big Jack White fan. He plays with some real emotion.

Ani Difranco. Far and away. In my opinion, one of the most underrated guitar players ever. Although her political, feminist positve lyrics might put off some people, as a guitarist, she is creative, unique, fresh, and groundbreaking.
Five foot nothing and a dynamo to see live, this girl not so much plays the guitar as attacks it, fights against it, strangles it like it was her mortal enemy. Percussive, yet musically sensitive and educated style, she pulls, pushes, hits and slaps the instrument, coaxing out of it, some of the most captivating, rythmically enticing, yet melodically sweet sounds I have ever heard.
Again, you may not like her lyrics, but if you are just looking for a purely virtuosso guitar player, this girl is it.

I was thinking the exact same thing as i was reading down. Saw him in concert when Audioslave came to town. He's beyond words.
Slash was also pretty Crazy at the Velvet Revolver Concert
As for Drummers ( Cause I play drums)
Danny Carrey (Tool)
Drave Grohl (Foo Fighters, NIN, Queens, Pro Bot, Nirvana)

Hi Everyone .. Newbie here
Well, since I'm such a fan of Metallica, I'd have to say Kirk Hammett and James Hetfield .. I'm also a fan of Black Sabbath and Tony Iommi is awesome and like someone else mentioned, I too think he is underrated.

I think some people are mixing up fame and skill. There are many many unsung guitar players that are not on this list. Ask a music executive. Good studio guitarists are among the top guitar players there are. They have to play a variety of music and do it all.
Not all, and none are performers, obviously, but there are some that kick the arse off many of the top mentioned people in this thread.

Chris Poland.
In one of Dave Mustaine's moments of lucidity, he said that this guy can play circles around him and if anybody is good enough to play circles around a guy as good as Mustaine, he must be great.
Plus, he appears on the only Megadeth album I can still listen to (Peace Sells...).
I also have his "Return To Metalopolis" CD and that thing just shreds.

I second that, she is REALLY something and technically brilliant...and we can't leave Flea off the list

An interesting note about Jimmy Page. Did you know he played on about 60% of all rock albums that came out of England from 1963-1965? Truly one of the best session guitarists ever.
LINK: http://www.jimmypageonline.com/11318/index.html And it looks like it was from 1963-1966. Its at the bottom of the 6th paragraph. "It is estimated that Jimmy Page appeared on 60% of rock music recorded in England between 1963 and 1966."
Anyways, here are my guitarists (you may not think they are the best, but they are inspirational).
Jimmy Page
Jimi Hendrix
Randy Rhoads
Eric Clapton
Jeff Beck
Peter Fripp
Tony Iommi
Eddie Van Halen
Peter Green
Mark Knopfler
Neil Young
Also, while I only really listened to Cowboys from Hell before his death, I have been one of those people that have gotten into his stuff following his unfortunate death. Dimebag Darrell was quite the guitarist, he had a unique style and could really play.
As for Drummers I like:
1. John Bonham 2. Keith Moon 3. Neil Peart
Bassists:
1. John Entwistle 2. John Paul Jones 3. Les Claypool

Where in the heck did you hear that?
A link? Wow,I am nonplussed .Not quite 60 % or close.
But still impressive,he played with everybody.

This is my greatest session guy

I mentioned David Lindley, but Steve Cropper he patterned music, astonishing how many great artists wanted to play with him.
In 1996, he was named the second greatest guitar player of all time, behind Jimi Hendrix, by Britain's Mojo magazine. When asked what he thought of Cropper, the guitarist at number four, The Rolling Stones' Keith Richards, said "Perfect, man".

I am surprised no one else has said Jeff Healey! Come one people an amazing slide guitar player "See the Light" is one of my fav cd's of all time. I dont like his new Jazz stuff as much, still pretty impressive to see live though.

I was thinking the same thing, but that probably isn't really what this thread is about. But I know what you mean - I love seeing bands live around town (although I rarely go out much anymore) and there are a bunch of pretty accomplished players that will probably never be well known anough to get a mention in a list like this.
I knew a few guys in university that, when they weren't studying, they had a guitar in their hand, and they had amazing skills. One had a great ear to go along with his play and could echo most of what he heard after hearing it once. Another grew up playing the violin, but could play almost any instrument handed to him.
And strangely, one guy was seen riding his bicycle down the street, half drunk, playing the guitar. Very bizarre.

Who do you guys think would rank?
Personally I think Jeff is right up there, Oscar Lopez is an amazing 6 string guitar player that I think is amazing, Clapton is of course a good choice IMO. Jimmy Page is also on my list.

It does not get much better than Jeff Healey with Stevie Ray Vaughan

And if you want to add another Canadian to the list, Colin James is pretty good too.
