Well, if it is a mega mall we need....Ground being cleared for $1B megamall racetrack project near Calgary

		| When the mall is completed by fall 2008, the jewels in its 270-hectare crown will be two racetracks - a one-mile thoroughbred track and a seven-furlong standardbred track. Beside them will be 102,000 square metres (1.1 million square feet) of retail space with 18 anchor tenants, more than 180 specialty stores, restaurants, a movie theatre and a bowling alley.

So says the guy with 10,500 posts. Guess that means there's nothing to do in Calgary?

Not trying to convince anyone of Edmonton. It's a nice city, but I'm not going to pretend it's a Vancouver/Montreal/Toronto, the way people in your city do.

No argument there.

Same situation from Calgary - you would be surprised how many people from Sask. in Calgary are moving back to their province.

What is Calgary? A two day town? Both of the cities are dead in the winter, and are no where near the levels of cities like Vancouver, Seattle, Toronto, Montreal, etc.

Calgary is just a hub to the Rockies. Nothing more, nothing less.
 |
Small point but no city on the continent is more dead in the winter than Seattle ... not very alive in the summer either.

Depends on how you look at it.

As a buisness centre, Calgary is already ahead of Montreal, and not far from Vancouver.

As a cultural hub, obviously not.

And for someone not trying to convince anyone of Edmonton, you are spending a lot of time trying to convince us of Edmonton. And as has been mentioned many times, Edmonton is apparently in desperate need to convince people it is more than just a mall given the money they are spending.

Though at least it is better than Edmonton spending $300,000 to not change a horribly outdated city slogan because nobody could think of anything better.

I think what people underdefine here is the understanding of the term "culture." Some may snub their noses at it, but Calgary is defined by it's roots as a cattle town. While that has largely ceased to be the case because of urbanization, the roots are celebrated and the values retained.
Calgary is a city of self-reliance. At the same it more than doubles the national average in terms of per-capita volunteerism. In ways that manifests itself in ways beyond mere civic boosterism. It is a benevolent and generous city. Just neighbours helping each other out.

Maybe we're all to busy helping out our fellow man than paying attention to garish bunting and pageantry.
