so movie studios are releasing blu-ray movies with both standard and HD versions on the same disk, that can be played in both blu-ray and standard DVD players? because that's what this article refers to

When did they get to 8?
Last month TDK announced they had developed a 6 layer disc.

DVD's were a blessing for the movie rental business. After a movie was out for a while on video, then you could get it for $20-$30, but when it was first released, the one's that were not 'sell through' were over $100. Crazy eh?

I had a friend who would pay over $100 for his movies. I thought he was crazy because a few weeks later I'd see the movies selling for $25

Bad math on my part. I figuered 8X25=200 but its 6X33=200.

I got my hd-dvd player yesterday. Just watched one movie. It looks and sounds excellent. Far surpassed my expectations. Looks much better than any of the movies on HBO HD. Nice to see no motion artifacting at all on things like explosions, etc. Definitely worth it, IMO. It does a great job at upconverting DVD too, even though they look pretty bad in comparison.

Really trying to make the patent broad - "several layers", "can include", "may be physical, logical or application layers". Talk about covering all your bases - I thought patents were supposed to be specific?

never written a patent I take it.
Sadly, many patents nowadays get granted simply based on thought experiments. No proof of concept is needed. Especially it seems in science. And even if you do provide proof of concept you can pretty much cover anything you want that is remotely related.
That patent is actually pretty straight forward in coverage!

No, but if they are written too broadly, shouldn't they be, in effect, unenforceable? I know there have already been talks about this process (multiple different layers), more than a month ago. I would think there would already be prior art.
