Riiiiight. People are allowed to do whatever they want in Europe. There are no confining laws on personal conduct at all over there. Have fun.

I don't think you'll get much argument on that, but there are too many people willing to evade responsability, and we all pay for that in things like rediculous laws.
Also, there are too many people who seem to think that unless it is expressly forbidden, it is OK. "There were no signs, so I figured I could pee on the side of your house" type of behaviour. Until this behaviour becomes the rare exception there will be more an more laws.
I tend to agree with you - if I look both ways, I should be able to cross. But there are too many people who would be willing to cut it too close, and that just leads to trouble.

I have a real issue with people not taking responsibility for their actions...
your action gets you a fine and you complain about it. How is that taking responsibility?

If there isn't a car, bus, train, truck or bike in sight and you jay walk I think common sense should dictate that a jaywalking ticket isn't really necessary. If you put anyone in danger or cause someone to even slightly slow down then yes, I think you deserve the fine. Unfortunately the city, police force and most of the people on the board disagree with me.

I never once complained about getting the ticket. Quite the opposite, actually. I said I crossed when it was red, I deserved it (post #36). plain and simple.
All I asked was if that officer feels proud to be an officer of the law....on a bike....handing out $25 jay-walking tickets.

wow 3 pages on the sin of j-walking, that's funny. Did a kid point at you and laugh like Nelson Muntz when you got the ticket? Cop is only doing his job, no sense on calling him names, but wearing nutters, you can totally make fun of him for that.

That is the type of duty he was assigned to do, just like other cops are assigned to murder cases or drug busts. He could always ask for a transfer or get a new job if he doesn't like his assignments.

There was another thread back in late 2005 about somebody trying to get out of a jaywalking ticket. It was about 3 or 4 pages long too.... I was actually in the middle of submitting a post to that thread when I discovered that the hacker had hit.
This thread is much more tame.

The only thing that anyone learned from this entire thread...because I only look for cop cars.

Incogneto - as someone that jaywalks a ton I understand your position and can relate as to how it's a seemingly minor law.
That said, if you take a step back here, you're basically slagging a man for doing his job. The cop didn't make the rules, he just gets told what to do. Blame the politicians that made the rules that he enforces. You're implying that "Mr Big Tough Cop" is stuck doing menial labor, which I fail to see the point as that's his job. He can't be strapping on Kevlar and gunning down bad guys all the time...
Take a day or two to cool down then look back at your post, and you'll see why everyone's dogpiling on you here.

What are the chances the cop was acting the way you described because you were acting like a smart ass towards him? I bet you gave him some attitude.

I am with Icogneto. That sucks, and the cop whose doing that job sucks as well.
I can blame the cop because he took the job, and likely is an idiot who is relegated to the j-walking patrol.
The law itself is rediculous. City's should be made for ther people, not cars. As Calgary is transforming, and allowing downtown to become more of a residential zone, there will be more and more foot traffic downtown.
I can agree that J-walking is a finable offense when obstructing traffic. Otherwise, give me a break.

This topic just makes me angry. Im with the guy who jaywalked. I live in the country and when I come to the city I jaywalk all the time. I look til there is absolutly ZERO chance of any type of problem then I cross. Its quite simple and it works EVERY TIME.
I also work at a lumber mill and workplace safety has been forcibly stuffed down our throats for so long I need a puke bucket for every saftey meeting. People never learn today is the problem.............as long as they follow company policy they will never get hurt.........I hate it.

You are asking us if he feels proud? I doubt any of us know. Did you ask him? If not, why not?
