Personally I think the new nintendo revolution looks very impressive. Assuming the controller works properly (it's supposed to orient itself in 3D space amazingly well) the game system could be revolutionary. I'm practically salivating thinking about being able to swing the sword in Zelda or playing a first person shooter by moving with the analog in the left hand and aiming/shooting with the right. If the games are fun and the system is as cheap as they say it will be I will likely get a nintendo revolution whenever it comes out.

This is the only direct quote on the PS3: (if the ps3) "delivers what everyone thinks it will, the game is up," Stringer boasts.
All the developers have already said it is harder to program for and is only a touch more powerful for gaming....so the game is hardly up especially given they expect ~11-15 mil 360's to be sold by years end. They may sell more if come holiday time the 360 is the only game in town in markets other than Japan. Not to mention that every game system Sony has brought out they have over-hyped and under-delivered.
But this is no different than what the latest analyst anyways....a holiday release (most likely in Japan). North America will follow after that.

Last I heard is that NVIDEA promised delivery for the video chips Q4 2006. So sony is looking for a holliday 2006 realse in Japan and Q1 2007 realse for NA. lso the price point for the PS3 could be as high as $900 usd.

its not going to be anywhere near that much. Thats how much manufacturing is, not what they're gonna sell it for. They have already come out and said that they will sell it for a loss.

The history of consoles suggests a company is willing to take a $100-150 dollar hit per console and no more than that (for 10 million consoles sold that is a $1 billion-1.5 billion dollar hit to the bottom line...it won't be much more than that). That's what Sony took on the PS and PS2, Mixrosoft on X-box and the 360 etc. They will not take a larger hit than that. So a $700-800 US price tage is a realistic number.

The Taiwanese company that is making the PS3 circuit boards stated their first bulk shipment of completed boards will not occur until late June/early July.
I think the release is starting to look like the 360 release - short supply and poor initial game support.

That's pretty much every new console release. PS2 I believe had the worst supply shortfall. The 360 launch lineup actually had the best average scores of any launch lineup....not that it was great but there were a few really good games and a couple of great ones.

on the PS3 sony is actually prepared to take a huge hit on the price tag because their goal is to get as many bluray players out as they can.

Yes they will take a hit but they will not take a multi-billion dollar hit to the bottom line immediately...especially when they are already struggling financially.

The new Blu-ray movies are purportedly going to cost U$29.99 or U$39.99
Pretty good sticker shock, and on top of the cost of the console (which will still be pricy, even after discount) I'm wondering what the cost of teh games will be.
I've heard a few of the larger game publishers are already dropping the price on current generation titles; people are starting to "wait for the next generation", even though I doubt many people know how long that will take.
I'm wondering if it will be to my benefit to pre-order a couple consoles and sell one of them during the shortage.

That's not much different than the Nintendo fans making a big thing about the controller. Both enhance the experience but to different groups of people.

well, i should be interesting...I've been a sony supporter since the first ps, so I am going to hang on and wait to see what happens with the ps3...
Sony will take a loss with the ps3, hoping to grab the lion's share of the installed base...people were projecting the psp at 600 dollars at launch, and obviously it wasn't that.
the entire blu-ray DRM thing is a bit annoying, but not a deal killer for me (unless its inclusion sky rockets the price)...DVDs weren't cheap when the first ones came out either, so i attribute it to growing pains (and recouping initial R+D investment).
Ultimately, it comes down to the games, and for me, playstation has the best games (outside of Halo)...third party support is huge, and the japanese game developers are jazzed on the ps3 - the 360 has tanked there so far (the original xbox sold more in the same timeframe)...and even though the xbox was easier to program, they never got a huge grouping of exclusive titles, which ultimately makes or breaks all systems...
Nintendo has fantastic in-house developers, but their games are pretty family oriented...unless they change that, I can't see the revolution attracting hardcore gamers...

Sone held a "PS Biz Brief" today to calrify the progress of the PS3.
In a nutshell, they say the unit will be released worldwide in November; it is supposed to be fully backwards compatible with PS1 & 2 Games (which will be upscaled to HD resolutions); it requires a hard drive; all PS3 games will be distributed on Blu-ray discs.
I'm sure there are lots of links, but I saw the data at IGN.com

Interesting..so the PS3 is basically coming out a year after Xbox 360. I wonder how much of a technological advantage that might give Sony, but on the other hand, XBOX 360 will have a years worth of development and games under their belt. If Microsoft can put out some A+ games before Sony comes out, it could really help their sales.

From what I hace heard and could be completely wrong.... the video card capability in the PS3 will be available to CPU users before the PS3 comes out. The video card power in the 360 is not acutally available to CPU users until later this year (of course there are several other things than video card that affects performance). Essentially it comes down to the same thing that all the developers are saying: both consoles have virtually the same power. It will be an interesting holiday battle as the developers are saying the 360 is much easier to develop for indicating that 2006 software lineup for the 360 could be far superior to the PS3 launch lineup (not to mention several PS3 launch games will also be available for the 360). And you can bet The 360 is predicted to have shipped 11+ million by that time which is a good number and ensures microsofts continues success in the console market. And it will allow them to significantly undercut the PS3 price. Sony is predicting the same type of sales numbers that Microsoft predicted (and have ended up getting now that the supply issue has been sorted).
Both will probably end up being successful in the end...though Sony better improve product quality this time out. The 100 million PS2's sold is a bit misleading as I know several people who ended up buying 4 or 5 because they always stopped working.

Looks like the release date is now set in stone - Nov. 17 for North America, Europe & Aus.
Pretty pricey, but since it includes Blu-ray, I wonder how it will compare to the 360 with the HD-DVD that was just announced (pricewise I mean). It will be interesting to see how it sells.
