They could have enforced the law just the way it was, but that wouldn't let the politicians give themselves credit for doing something.

It was, of course, a federal idea. Congress withheld highway funding from any state that refused to raise the drinking age to 21, so in the end they all caved.
All I am saying is that there and no moral shortcoming for 'underage drinking' at age 18.

I fully agree with you on that.

But since it was against the silly law for McKenna to be in the bar, it's an especially bad look when he socks somebody on the jaw while there.

Jay's right, it's all because of a MADD campaign during Reagan era.

One thing we shouldn't forget here is the Flames often-stated priority for "character" when they draft.
Every franchise says they prioritize character when they draft.

This is the kind of thing I'm sure there will be details surface on with it happening in public, surprised it's been quiet so far. Some people saying there was a fan chirping or harassing him and that other tweet saying he had some conflict with bouncers over them refusing to serve him.

edit - twitter chatter now saying that a severely inebriated student called McKenna's mom a pretty insulting/bad word and he knocked him out cold breaking his jaw and knocking out 3 teeth in the process. Not exactly a reliable source random twitter users and am sure there will be 100 random stories out there though

How long does something like this take to move through the judicial system in the US? Is it insanely long like in Canada and likely to be hanging over the draft?

I recall vividly, because I ran up against that law myself before I turned 21. My idiot stepbrother was meeting me at an airport in California, and he insisted on dragging me into a bar in the terminal so he could have a drink. The waitress refused to serve either of us until I left, so my stepbrother never did get his drink. (I didn't want one.)

Why, yes, my stepbrother drove me away from the airport, so he was planning to drink and drive. But it was vitally important that I not be allowed to sit at a table in the bar.

Sounds like a very stupid thing he did but, if it’s the result of a bar fight gone sideways, what are we as fans of a sport where we regularly cheer on guys punching each other in the face going to say?

That's fair, but nobody seems to be disputing that he has a broken jaw and McKenna's fist broke it. Defence counsel will have a big hill to climb if they want to establish extenuating circumstances.

Two game misconducts and now a felony charge in the last two weeks ... he really took those criticisms of him not being tough enough or willing to go into the dirty areas seriously.

I'd still draft him. Maybe he falls to the Vegas pick.

Sounds similar to the Ferland assault case back in the day.

I am not assuming anything until all the details come out BUT if he did this and broke the guys jaw, he may get off on the charges but I am thinking a civil suit would surely follow.
The Americans love to sue, dont they?

I read that somewhere. He got a lot of penalty minutes the few games leading up to that Saturday game.

Clearly seems like stuff is all linked.
