I’m still trying to figure out why this needed a press release.

Cause it is not a retool or a rebuild unless you announce it.

Whereas if you do announce it, you don't have to actually do anything. Certain people will give you full credit for doing it just because you wrote a letter; the same people who give no credit at all for actions without a letter.

The big thing is Panarin not being re-signed.

https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article...act-extension/

This likely makes him the top trade target now.

I think it would have been a better letter if Drury acknowledged that he's done a crappo job, and that a retool/rebuild is necessary, whether he's at helm or not.

The Rangers are lucky they won that cup 30 years ago or else they we’d be making fun of their drought more than the Leafs.

Just a horribly run organisation that can’t make use of their huge advantage attracting star players. As a Flames fan they are one of the rare teams I can look at and say at least we are not them.

Not sure why everyone is ripping on the Rangers like they've had zero success.

They announced their last retool Feb 2018.

Missed the playoffs 18-19, out in qualifying round in 19-20, missed playoffs 20-21.

Then they went to ECF in 21-22.
Out in Round 1 in 22-23.
Went to ECF in 23-24.

They ran into Tampa in 21-22 who was going for a three-peat.
They ran into Florida in 23-24 who was making their 2nd run to the SCF in successive seasons and winning their first Cup.

That's just being pretty unlucky.

Last year was a disappointment and they missed the playoffs. This year's not going much better so they've announced a new retool.

As a fan, what more can you possibly want. They made the ECF 2 out of 3 years and now didnt do so well for 1.5 years and have decided to take a different direction.

Hardly anything to rip on....especially being fans of this grossly mismanaged franchise.

It's called engaging with your customer.

You know .. the ones that you generate revenue from.

Makes logical ####ing sense...except for in this market... where fans go out of their way to make excuses for ownership/management for everything.

Look at the actions.... they tell ya.....well the actions tell me that the players that have been traded are the ones that forced the Flames hand. That's pretty much been supported by ALL of the insiders -- Lebrun, EF, Dreger, Seravelli. But what do those morons know though right. Fake insiders.

Chris Drury became GM on May 5, 2021.

Rangers went to the ECF in 2 our of his first 3 seasons. They lost to Tampa and Florida.

What more do people want?

7 Stanley Cups in 5 years would be a good starting point!

The Rangers were having issues long before JT Miller arrived causing them to Trade Trouba, Kakko and Kreider? They are swapping out that core for a reason and dont seem to be done.

In other words, they announced that they were going to be bad, and then didn't follow through in their actions.

It's very telling to see which people think words without actions are praiseworthy, and actions without words are worthless.

Given the amount of criticism this team gets from posters on this site, I sometimes wonder where comments like this come from.

Anyway, Flame away
Not really a personal reason...it was a business reason. He runs an entertainment business and he wanted to keep their 1st so that the Rangers got eyeballs at the venue he also owns for the draft.

So...I'd be ecstatic if ME ran the Flames that way.

Also if they addressed me as a fan the way they do in the first paragraph of that letter, also happy.

I dunno, I’m with the guy on hard drugs. I couldn’t possibly ask for more from a rebuild than two appearances in a conference final. That’s the goal, and the Rangers deserve our adoration for this absolutely historic feat.

Personally, Drury deserves a lifetime appointment to the role. Flawless.

Jeez.....have a tough day? Quite aggressive for a simple comment.

I don't see other teams release statements every time they're going to rebuild/retool/whatever. I don't see the point. Just do it and the fans will clue in pretty quickly what's going on. You don't need to make some grand announcement.

The Rangers announced a rebuild (or reshape if you like) in 2018. In fact they already had made one move by trading Raanta and Stepan for the 7OA (their actual pick was 21st) and Tony D'Angelo. Then they picked a guy 7OA who was out of the league in a couple seasons.

They then had the 9OA the next year and got Kravtsov, who was also a huge dud.

So then at the 2018 TDL, they traded McDonough (who had a year left and therefore was like the Rasmus trade people wanted last season) along with JT Miller for Brett Howden, Vladislav Namestnikov, Libor Hajek, a 2018 first-round pick and a 2019 second-round pick. They drafted duds with those picks. And traded away the two players for peanuts.

They didn't tank, but managed to win two lotteries to get Lafrieniere and Kakko. Their actual success was not in building through getting draft picks and prospects, but rather from signing big money UFAs Panarin and Trocheck, stealing Fox, and stumbling into Shesterkin in the 4th round back in 2014.
