By your logic, every GM before the salary cap sucked? Holland was the GM for the Red Wings in 2007-08 two years after the cap. They went on to make the playoffs another 8 years straight after that.
Yeah E=NG, and yeah in the last 5-6 seasons his philosophy has not built good teams, but the results are the results. 3 Stanley Cups is rare air no matter the context.

Hard to argue with it being the right time to fire him (and a better argument can be made that it should have happened a few seasons ago).
However, he certainly made some strong moves. Raise your hand if you wanted the Flames to make it to the conference finals in back-to-back years in the last era under Treliving. Yep, all hands raised. There are many on here who still view Treliving's tenure as a really good one, but Lamoriello had a better one statistically in NYI. Lamoriello made it to the conference finals twice, and Treliving made it to the 2nd round twice. Also notable is that Lamoriello took a team that had just lost their franchise player for free in the previous off-season, while Treliving took over a young team with very promising talents.
The point isn't to disparage Treliving here, but rather to show that Lamoriello at least started off really well in NY, and sometimes when that happens (and given his reputation on top of it), it takes a little while for a GM to be let-go.
I think he is the type of executive that can go into an organization and clean it up. I can think of a handful of spots that can use him either as a GM or as a POHO for a few years. The issue is you probably want to move on after 3 or so seasons. He is probably the GM version of the tough coach with a short shelf life. I will say this - I know that Pegula is probably going to promote Lindy Ruff into the GM role, but maybe I would hire Lamoriello instead. Or make him the POHO and promote Ruff (first time GM if it happens) much like Calgary had with Burke and Treliving for the first few years. That to me is the perfect scenario in which to attempt to fix the Sabres.

Sounds like the Isles reached out to Montreal about Gorton, and were told he's not available. Darche may be their top target now.
As per the Athletic.

Would be a better choice than LeBrun's reported favorite, Holland.
Actually anyone would be.
Its like waiting forever to have a child, and finally you're pregnant, you wait the whole 9 months and finally the baby is born and you name it Ken Holland.

I would have rather kept 82 year old Lou than go to 69 year old Ken Holland.

are there really no younger options available? Feels like some teams are cycling through the same old guys. Truly baffling that teams might look at Ken Hollands body of work in Edmonton and say "yeah, give me some of that".

The guy will be 83 just after opening night. He was probably a passion baby, conceived in panic, just after the US entered WW2, with his dad expecting to be shipped off to fight.
It's time he took some time off.

My sources have told me that it'll be announced shortly that the Islanders have reconsidered and will be announcing shortly that Lou is coming back into the organization into a role of Lou's choosing which will remain undisclosed after 2 gentlemen who identified themselves as 'Joey' and 'Jimmy' delivered a message and presumably offer from Lamoriello that the Islanders staff described as something "they couldn't refuse" and allowed them to "see the light and errors in their ways".

There would also be some potential complications for a new GM in terms of replacing current staff, which includes assistant GM Chris Lamoriello, Lou’s son. Patrick Roy also has three years left on his contract on an extension that Lamoriello signed after the 2023-24 season. A new GM should get say over the coach, but again, with Lamoriello advising Malkin, that might not happen.
