Our desired end game here is McDavid wanting out. I think chances are he does-re-sign with them, but a massive first rounder failure lowers those odds.

Just for moral and for those two young to remember the Miracle on Machester, the greatest upset in NHL history.
The Oilers finished about 50 points ahead of the Kings and were the decided Stanley Cup favourites. They featured a young star powered lineup, whereas the Kings were more a team of veterans and castoffs. It was supposed to be a slaughter of epic proportions as the Oilers lead by Gretzky coasted to an easy Cup.
It didn't happen.
In 1982 the upset propelled the young Oilers to learn how to win and not be so arrogant.
This year, if the Oilers lose to the Kings the window pretty much slams shut and changes will have to happen to a creaky old Oilers teams with no depth, no good prospects and no draft picks and a cap issue that nobody wants for a team this old, creaky, prospect nacking draft pick lacking franchise.
I'm sure McDavid will sign with the Oilers, the pressure will be on him to sign a long term highest paid player in the NHL contract if he wants to stay, or he could look at a franchise clearly with the window slamming shut and think a nice life in Florida, or New York or California looks good.

I'm on the fence anyway, they probably get better from trading him...don't see how they get better paying him more
I get the PTSD but some of you obviously haven't watched much Kings this year...they are a totally different team and actually have a goalie. With all due respect to Rittich.

I get what you mean. It probably doesn't happen often, but in this scenario I will be happy if he stays or goes. T
They don't have anything coming down the pipe that will help McDavid and Draisaitl in the next few years. They traded away their next two first rounders and so they don't have a first rounder until 2027. They are going to be in the same position that Chiarelli was in and trying to build a team out from UFA signings. We all know how well that worked for them last time. Oilers have probably had dead cap space for the last 15 years because of bad signings. (still 4 or 5 years more of Campbell).
If he decides to leave they may have to trade him knowing they don't get the 2026 pick which might end up being Mckenna. Or they try to keep him and he walks for nothing.

I don't know what I want.
Knowing that, I think Mckenna must be doing cartwheels!

I’ve said before, we should want him to stay. His huge contract and post-apex decline will handcuff the Oilers for a decade.
They need to get Byfield and Jeannot back healthy here though hopefully.
Pretty sure you quoted the wrong post but Byfield is fine IMO. Would have made zero sense to put him back in plus now they can say hes injured. Nurse gets suspended, Byfield misses the meaningless (for them) game.

Haha what if they walk him to UFA? Who wants to be known as the GM that traded Mavi? They get nothing. And the media frenzy for every day that he doesn’t sign…

Thanks for sharing Captain! I wasn’t aware of this. Great story, hoping for an upset!

They can't trade him. Not only is it a bad look for the club but he has a NMC, why would he want the team he is being traded to losing those key assets? They pretty much have to play it out and let him walk while telling the fanbase they went to the last hour to try and get him to stay. I mean I suppose he could waive as a rental to a contender, I wonder what a soon to be free agent McDavid is worth?

Cap going up helps them.
He's an offensive cheat code. When they trade him I doubt they are better. It will be a quantity for quality deal like most of those types.
I want him out of there.
