That was the dirtiest play I’ve seen in a long time. A couple inches away from the NHL having another Bertuzzi incident on hits hands.

Canucks with an empty net down 4-0 late is an interesting move. I wonder how quickly Tocchet bolts in the off-season to greener pastures?

Minny probably makes it even if the Flames win most of their remaining games. Flames max is 98 points; if they get to 95, Minny needs just 6 points in their 6 games to take the spot.
|
If we beat them I think they’ll only win 2 of their last 6.

Canucks are trending to finish 21 points lower than they did last year. One of the biggest drops in the league.

Wild looked terrible tonight but stole a point and the Rangers aren't very good either...need a few things to start breaking the Flames way though

Yeah the Canucks have already been through the rebuild and were supposed to be competing...short window, serves them right for blowing it vs. the Oilers

You'll take it? Do you know how dire the standings are for the Flames right now? A Wild loss tonight in regulation and Flames win tomorrow was still a long shot for us to make the playoffs, lol.

They are not backing into the playoffs, they earned those early season points.
Isn't it just as lame for a team to flounder most of the season and them go on a run at the end to squeek into the playoffs?

Well aware of how dire it is.

Just my 2c. Not trying to upset anyone or pressure anyone into agreeing with me.
But I think wins/points secured during the pressure of a playoff race are more an indicator of how good a team is than points picked up in Oct/Nov.
And keep in mind, rosters change over the course of a season, due to trades, injuries, etc. So your team in March/April is more likely to be "the real you" than your team in Oct/Nov.
It's true that there are cases like Minny where they lose games down the stretch due to injuries, and get their players back in time for the playoffs. But if they don't get their players back for the playoffs, suddenly the NHL has a lower-quality team in the postseason, instead of a team that was securing more points down the stretch.
The thing about Minny too, they were 18-4-4 on Dec 6, and have gone 23-23-3 since. So their slide began 7 weeks prior to losing any key players to injury.

This is a really bizarre take. They lost a guy on pace for 110 points and their best center.
Should the NHL change the point system to award more points in March and April.

No, I don't think they can do that without creating a new huge problem. How do you ensure each team gets roughly the same strength of schedule during the stretch where the extra points are awarded?
I think the only thing the league could realistically do is go to a 3-2-1 points system, so that teams have more of an opportunity to make up ground by stringing together regulation wins.
