I mean Backlund was the one who picked up his blocked shot in the neutral zone, skated it across the ice making a backhand pass past a Habs player to Farabee entering the zone, then skated down into the corner to recieve the Farabee pass, skates out of the corner to make the pass past a defending Habs player.
But yeah, lucky he didn't have to skate anywhere.

Regarding Backlund:
For me, the issue is Rooney, because it means they can’t play Zary at centre. If they sat Rooney and called up, say, Kerins, they could run a centre depth chart of:
Kadri
Frost
Backlund
Zary
I dig that

Oh man… missed a good one sounds like! Date night with the wife.
But always love a big win against the Habs, Leafs or Bruins at the Saddledome.
Proud of the guys as after a gruelling 6 game road trip playing every other day this is a big win actually. They might just pull it off which would be so so so sweet.
Nice to see Farabee score too.

Farabee gaining steam now as that scorer he was touted as.
But please, god, someone else figure out how to put the puck in the net. Even every other game. Anybody.
Flames have the worst goals-for in the NHL. Mind blowing that they're occupying a playoff spot. Imagine if they were near league average in goals for? They might be ahead of the Oilers.

I’m the last one who would turn against Backlund. But yes, he is slow this year for whatever reason. Age or injury.
He’s still worth his contract though. Every year 1/2 point per game playing against those guys is unreal.

Zary isn’t a fourth liner, and he shouldn’t be on the 4th line.

Think they should install soccer nets at the saddledome.

I believe that the Flames “Checking/Shutdown line”, that has been centered by 2C/3C Mikael Backlund for so many years is far underrated.
Most here remember how many players have benefitted from the “Backlund Bump”; Bouma and Mangiapane among them.
16.5 minutes a game + some PK time if you’re solid.
In 2021/2022, the “Checking/Shutdown Line” of the Mangiapane/Backlund/Coleman line allowed the first line of Gaudreau/Lindholm/Tkachuk line to do near anything that they wanted to during home games.
Within 2 years, Backlund and Coleman will both age out, and unfortunately, I do not see any forwards currently in the Flame’s organization who are anywhere near close to replacing them at their 2nd/3rd line shutdown roles.
Does anyone here see any candidates?

Bennett too. Frolik. All I said was that it looks like he’s slower this year.

I don’t know if he’ll reach Backlund’s prime level of shutdown centre but I think Frost has some great two-way ability that could grow into taking on that role along with some better offensive skills. He made an unreal pass to Sharangovich tonight that lead to the biggest save from the Montreal goaltender. He moves well, is usually on the right side of the puck and is sneaky at takeaways. I also find he makes a lot of smart decisions with the puck. Not many giveaways in the neutral zone or in his own zone that I notice.

Big win for the boys, a few days here to rest up and then a huge game against the nucks who will be on a back to back. GFG!

🙄
I’m just saying that he should be playing centre. They can slot the centres however.
If they play him as a centre with Kerins, for example, I’d consider it at WORST a second third line.
Maybe something like:
10 91 17
27 16 76
6 47 70
86 11 20
Two “third lines”..and they can move wingers around.
