5 years is a long time to retain 25% and tie up a retain spot

If Jones can rebound to where he was for a couple of seasons a few years ago and lives up to his expectations - massive win for Florida. Other than that, Chicago probably wins this one now and tomorrow. They trade Jones away for basically the equivalent of the cap retention compensation.

Big trade nonetheless. I guess they are all happening now! Exciting!

You do realize that Knight was totally redundant for a SC champion and he was making 4.5 million? Sitting on the bench. It was the only contract to move without making a hole somewhere else.

Jones will look much better on a good team.

And will probably play to his 40s considering his durability. This is a no brainer for Florida.

Even with Brossoit on the IR, you have to think that Mrazek is on the move...

But they can probably run a 3 headed goalie monster for the rest of the season and then deal with the surplus in the offseason when everyone is healthy.

It would be interesting if they end up with Soderblom and Knight as their tandem next year.

3 years ago they were trying to give him away...things can change quick. Im not even saying its a bad trade just that the reasoning is suspect. Panthers will need to find another goalie that can step in. How many 40 year old starters in the NHL??

It is Florida, they will just sign a goalie in free agency. By the time they need a goalie they will just sign one in free agency. On a team with proper structure I suspect Jones becomes a 40-50 point dman who looks half decent defensively. This trade sure makes their top 4 on the backend solid for this year at least. They are in a bit of a tight spot this offseason in terms of cap space to sign Ekblad and Bennett but after this offseason they will have a lot of money to spend the following offseason and for the foreseeable future after given the longterm contracts they have signed.

retaining gets the first and Knight is worth the flier for the Hawks. I wonder what happens with Ekblad and if he is signed or even traded?

I was only debating the notion that Bob made Knight redundant...they will need a goalie

One is out for the year, and maybe more, and one is a UFA.

Not a big deal.

He will get re-signed at a much lower cap hit if at all. I'd imagine something around 5M, depending hugely on the term ofc.

Five years of retention @2.5 is definitely more than a first though as value. Biggest retention in history? Can't think of anything else.

RFA, not UFA. And I expect that of the 3 existing G, Soderblom is the young 25yo up-and-coming goalie that they want to keep.

Hopefully this sets the market for players paid like stars but are actually disappointments, Huberdeau might fetch 3x firsts after this news.

Jones is very polarizing...some love him and some think he is replacement level

Jones is definitely better than replacement level, but he never came anywhere near living up to his initial draft hype – and isn't close to being worth his full contract. Chicago foolishly paid him to be a clear #1 defenceman, and he just isn't that.

Not sure when this is from but his most recent card looks like this...he might look better on a better team but 5x7M still isn't cheap

21-22 numbers are getting pretty irrelevant...ask Lindholm
