If I've learned one thing about the Flames over the years, it's that they always do the exact opposite of what you expect from them, both for good and bad.

Yes, this! We'll see an unexpected win tonight.

But yeah that's a bit crazy when you need to get a good start on this road trip.
I thought Solo looked good but that Andersson was a tire fire in that game.

It's almost like who you're playing with - and against - matters.
Expected goals for and against are absolutely atrocious at assessing how well an individual player performed. Especially for single game sample sizes.

Vladar is not an NHL goalie. Why not call up someone else if Wolf needs rest?

Vladar gets most of the tougher games, so not a surprise if he starts.

Taking a while to get to 5000

Except when it was Toronto, Colorado....
Pat on 960 tying himself into knots trying to justify the start but even his cohost admits to being surprised.
And good on Aaron Vickers for calling out the quote from Huska about starting Wolf 15 times if they had to cause they need points.

This Vladar surprise start, is starting to feel like, IMO, orders from above. I saw somewhere earlier mentioned that Vladar is the only current flame in trade rumours. Maybe a few teams have asked for a quick look?
I dunno I'm grasping at straws here.

I don't know how that is bad coaching. We're entering murderers row on this road trip, Vladar is going to have to play a game or two. He's had a long layoff, so I think getting him game action isn't a bad idea. Also, they could be showcasing for a trade so they may want to get him some more games leading up to the deadline.

Maybe they can bump his value enough to squeeze a pick out of a trade?

Bump is value to what? What is the expectation for a goalie with a .888 save % and 3.07 GAA?
Why would any team trade for that. Career .893

Vladar has been off too long and needs to play at some point. Wolf already got back in action, and now Vladar needs to get in for a game that is likely projected as a loss regardless of who starts. The way Washington is rolling right now, tonight's game might be the least winnable of the trip. Maybe Wolf can steal two or three of the other games on this roadie, as he will likely start four of the five remaining games.
Then again, maybe Wolf is sick or is nursing a minor injury.

If a team needs a goalie heading into the playoff push, Vladar is a decent option. I'm sure GMs and scouts aren't going to solely rely on numbers and watch the games to see how he performs under the eye test. If he has some solid games going into the deadline I could definitely see that convincing a GM who is in need of a cheap goalie.

Flames were at the salary cap prior to the 23-24 season and actually had to move Toffoli to even get below the cap ceiling.
Flames made no major free agent signings heading into the season because they didn't have any space to do so. They also had a ton of upcoming UFAs and could really commit to cap space at the time.
They also had Lindholm, Kadri, and Backlund as top 9 centers - so why would Strome have picked Calgary over Washington who was offering top 6 minutes with Ovechkin.
Sure I guess they could have shipped out a bunch of salary and probably got poor returns since cap space was at such a premium that offseason, to try to make room to sign Strome, but that likely wasn't really an option.

I think he is a better goalie than people give him credit for. His stats are pretty reflective of the team and how almost everyone predicted the Flames would be this year. It's no secret that Wolf has been exceptional and therefore raising where the Flames should be at the moment. I think if you put Vladar on a great team, he probably looks like a good back-up option.
I'm not saying he has high trade value, but he doesn't suck as bad as people are saying. He reflects what a team is, whereas Wolf covers a lot of warts.
Having said that, he is coming in cold today, on the road, against the top team in the East. I am expecting a lot of people to have their bias confirmed today.

I missed the part where the Flames had an option on him.
Maybe you should save your sneering for Chicago, who lost him for nothing by not making him a qualifying offer in 2022.

He has a lot more experience than most guys who would be available as a backup at the TDL.
