I'm not going to put you on ignore as I enjoy the vast majority of what you post. I just never understood why certain topics irk you that much(which I find amusing), and why you yourself actively seek them out. A waiver thread is going to have people talking about the possibility of a player being claimed, including by the Flames.
|
That's fair and I guess I went to the always someone wanting to claim waivers well too many times. I actually don't care about it, I just find it funny that anytime there is a player available for free no matter the fit there is always those that want a claim put in.

Saad was okay in his prime, but, seemed a one-trick pony. A lot of speed, indifferent finishing. He got a lot of top six forward LW minutes with some elite scorers, but, was at best, a 20ish goal guy, that with 20 to 30 assists. He was just okay, but, not, really missed once he was moved. Also decent, but, unremarkable as a defensive forward. He is, hardly, worth that salary, at this point in his career.

I too also suffer from post traumatic waiver disorder.

I think it's understandable that people are keen on the prospect of claiming players on waivers when the Flames have had a lot of success doing so lately.

Taking a while to get to 5000

If the Flames were serious about him, wait for him to clear, make a deal where the Blues retain or take a pick from them. Or both.
Don't just pluck a guy off the wire with a year and a half left at full value.

Wonder if STL trades him with a pick now that he's cleared waivers.

Looking for a learning opportunity...what would be the logic for Saad to agree to a contract termination? He's forfeiting millions of dollars

Maybe he's just betting on himself with a new team, or he wants to compete for a cup. He could also just hate his working environment, and the fact that he already made $52.5M in the NHL helps too.

I would also say he is gambling on himself. Land a league minimum contract for remainder of year in hopes of turning his career around.
One thing to keep in mind is Stan Bowman drafted Saad, traded him away and then traded back for him. Could the Oilers be adding?

I guess it's outside my comprehension. He's giving up ~$6MM (remainder of this year + next) to gamble on getting a couple more years at league minimum. I've never had that choice in my life so can't judge, but the math doesn't work in this old brain.

The buyout of his contract sets the max. he would receive.
I assume he expects to get more than that?

My understanding he's agreed to a contract termination, not a buyout. Once his contract is terminated, he'd have to hope for a deal better than 2 x $4.5 to exceed his current situation. If someone were willing to pay more than what he's getting, they'd just trade for him. I don't know what Euro leagues pay, but I doubt he's getting anywhere near that money overseas.

I bet a team told the Blackhawks that they would take him but not with that contract and probably gave them a ballpark of how much retention they would require, then the Hawks probably went to Saad and said you can go to the minors and maybe never get another shot, or such and such team will pay you "x" amount.
I'm not a big fan of contract terminations without a cap penalty unless there is some kind of serious breach.
