Vladar could have earned it if he got the SJ and Chi starts and Wolf drew Tampa and Vegas
I feel for the guy. He gets tough opponents or the Flames play flat like tonight

Tonights game was that goofy call against Kadri, the missed call on the Backlund Slash leading to a 5-3 goal essentially, and the total lack of a high stick call on Backlund and Huberdeau. NHL ref's need refreshers or are they pro new league teams.
On that note the entire Utah team was really composed and played a great game.

Huska blames the third period for the loss and lack of push back. Likes the play and passion of Kadri.

I know that's in jest but the Flames issue this season is Wolf exceeding expectations. I don't care what anyone says, finishing bottom 10 is the best thing that can happen for this organization and Vladar is doing his part with his .888 SV% which is amongst the worst in the league but Wolf is totally negating that with a top 10 SV%.
Now to backtrack, I think Wolf seamlessly translating to the NHL is an excellent outcome but this team still needs to stockpile some more top 10 talent as Kadri, Backlund, Coleman, etc are all on the backside of their careers and while it's nice to see the team playing hard and staying in the hunt, nobody is going to care about this season when they are opening up the new arena but they will lament missing on an opportunity to pick top 10 & 28 vs 23 & 28. Still things may work out as I don't expect the team to be better next season so the top 10 picks will likely come so I don't want to be a total party pooper for people that care more about today than tomorrow.

I feel like we're losing a lot of games in the third - not sure if it's conditioning or inexperience or just being beat by more skilled players or what.
But it's frustrating to have games slip away so often.

Maybe so but sometimes the team just plays better in front of the other guy, for whatever reason. Wolf should have the gig for a while now to see if he can hold on to it. And I don't think Vladar has been bad.

Truly feels like we are on the verge of absolutely wasting another season being 14-18 in league standings and getting smacked in 4 playoff games (or narrowly missing).
This franchise is incapable of learning.

The Flames are managing Wolf’s workload, which is perfectly normal for young goalies. It’s rare for even the best goaltenders to play 50+ games in their second season in the league. Vasilevsky had seasons of 16 and 24 games before he hit 50 in his third season. Shesterkin played 12, 35, then 53. I don’t expect the 50/50 load management to change.

It was a fun game. My first game at the dome in over 5 years as I am back in town for the holidays. Pretty loose game all around. Flames have to work hard otherwise they get caved in. Not enough talent to coast or get a few easy goals. They showed up 2 min late to the third and that’s the game.
Fun experience at the Dome. After we trade a player or two and teams tighten up I still think we will drop down the standings. Pretty tight standings right now so a small losing streak puts us to bottom 10.

I think conroy did as much as he could to ice a team that would finish in the bottom 5. Young goaltenders , a pretty horrid D group and some retirement contract vet forwards. The players had other ideas . And power to these players for not laying down.

Have you seen the teams in the bottom 10? I’ve said it before but I think at most there is the 9th and 10th place up for grabs. I also think Philly takes one of those spots. IMO there is 1 spot up for grabs. It’s not just flames going on a downward spiral to make bottom 10. The other teams have to win some also . I will be shocked at this stage if they make bottom 10. I also don’t think they will make playoffs but I’m rooting for them.

Trying to point the finger for last night's loss at Vladar is lazy and inaccurate.
The Flames didn't play very well.

The goalie guy that comes on the Fan960 had some interesting things to say about the deployment. Summed up that when Wolf has off days/starts, he is still working on a bunch of things with the goalie coach. He is constantly working on things still, that drive is what makes him the player he is.
When vets get to the number one stage the off days are used to mange rest and not to work on their game and develop skills. Wolf and the team are still working on a bunch of things, so they aren't full blown rest days.
Just a neat perspective I hadn't thought about rest and development. It isn't as easy as just give him the net. I am sure once the team and Wolf are happy with where Wolf is, as he continues down the development curve, he will be getting more of those starts.

The stats can't even back that up.
He's statistically amongst the worst goalies in the entire NHL since he came into the league. Most goalies with numbers like his don't even remain in the league. Perhaps he's great in the room, but let's not ignore facts and say he's a "great" backup.

Vasilevsky was also 20 and 21 years old when he had those low starts. At 22 and 23 he was putting up 50 and 60 starts a season, Wolf is 23 now. Not every goalie takes the same path. Wolf starting 41 this year and maintaining his play is great but nine more games hitting 50 isn't bad if he's playing well.
