The whole mission of a carrier group is providing portable air superiority, so air defense is the top priority. This is what they do, they're the best in the world.
Maybe it's safe to say there was a physical object with astounding capabilities? I think this is where we're at, no further.
There's a 37 minute interview with the guy in charge of air defense for the group when it happened, and I like it because it's not a podcast style discussion thing. He just explains what happened.
