So if he break it this year, he’ll be pretty close to the same number of games needed to hit that milestone. Maybe 20-30 more?

The fact that he is so productive this late in his career compared to Gretzky’s production decline is incredible. Say what you want about his conditioning, but he’s getting it done. Can he do it all season? What a story!

You only have to go back and look at a lot of Gretzky's goals in the 80's (tiny goaltenders with their tiny equipment) to see how impressive OV's achievement is as it's so much harder to score goals in today's NHL.

I'm 100% on board with Ovi doing it ASAP. Hope he breaks it this season and gets another bushel next year, so we can put to rest this Gretz is the greatest nonsense.

(and once again worth mentioning - Ovi had to do this with multiple work stoppages).

I loved when you watch those 80s goals and you see Wayne come through the neutral zone unchallenged, and the big lumbering dmen just back off all the way down to their circles. So Wayne comes in over the blue line with a slapper that waffles and wobbles on the way to the net and the tiny ass goal (probably hungover) can't even stop it.

Comedy.

Has to do with the ass-clowns who think Ovechkin has nothing to lose by condemning Putin.

I hope he fails though. Would rather the record stay with an Oiler than go to a Putin-lover.

That was also his 31st hat trick, putting him 1 behind Esposito for 5th all time.

Wayne had 50(!) and Mario had 40 tricks in their careers. Insane how quickly they racked up points back in the day.

I remember seeing a photo of OV this past summer and seriously questioning whether or not he would actually break the record. Very shocked he's producing at his current clip given his um... body lol. I guess when you can score the way OV can, it doesn't matter that much when you're out of shape!

If not for injuries, I feel like it would have a been a coin toss on whether he or Gretzky was the best ever (I still feel Mario was better).

I think Crosby is firmly below Gretzky and Lemieux, in the same tier as Howe, Jagr, Yzerman, and Sakic as the best of the best forwards all time.

I agree we were lucky watching two of the top 10 forwards of all time at the same time for their entire career. Just amazing players.
Even Gretzky has said that he thought Lemieux was better and would've taken a bunch of his records if not for health issues.

Tie breaker goes to the guy who isn’t an Oiler.

Never really wanted Ovi to get the record, but Gretzky is at least as big as a POS, so now the record can fall, I don't care.

Lemieux was better anyway.
