Mantha shot a lot today, and has really good shot, but they did some drills (dump in, like gets a shot, then regroup and reenter for another shot) but without defensive players or pressure. The drills where they had D, it looked like their line was still very much trying to find chemistry. I think of a guy like Monahan and how he was very good at sneakily finding the quiet spots, and wonder if Mantha can figure that out
Wish I saw the first morning skate. I know Kadri is a top C, but he’s kind of been selfish at times. Sharangovich is a shooter and Kuzmenko is a bit of both. He’s definitely very skilled, was working after the captains skate tipping point shots from Miromanov. And 40 goal guys aren’t necessarily pass first. That line could be awesome, but I wonder what the chemistry is going to be like
I’ll add that a lot of the drills started the offense in zone or from the neutral zone, so you couldn’t get a read as much on what the rush game with Pospisil and Huberdeau will look

Thanks for the write-up! I love reading people's takes on how the players and lines are looking at camp.

I won't mind a bit if Barrie makes the team on the third pair. He's been through the development cycle of teams in Colorado and Edmonton. He's a guy who is well aware of what a team with young talent needs to do to go from just being talented to being a perennial playoff team. He's been to the playoffs 6 of the last 7 seasons and the only one he missed was when the Oilers traded him for Ekholm. Given his reputation as a great dressing room guy, I think he can help his younger teammates and maybe even the coaches to understand what it takes.

I agree. If he is the positive dressing presence people say, the Flames could use some of that since there are bound to be some down times this season.
We can also use someone on the 3rd pairing that can help the forwards out a bit by getting the puck out of the zone.

To add to this question, do we know where the games are being televised? Are they likely to be on NHL.TV or is it Canada TV only?

Agree with all this. The only problem I have with it is that the offensive-Dman-on-the-3rd-pair guy is the spot where Brzustewicz, Poirier, and Parekh (for 9 games) can get a chance. If we fill that spot with Barrie, those guys are blocked.
I think we have enough leaders. And I don't want the team to improve to the 8-15 area. They need to finish bottom 10 - preferably bottom 5 - and they need to start giving the kids opportunities (which go hand in hand).

No reason for Barrie on this team unless they trade Rasmus. Give the minutes to the numerous defensemen prospects.

Signing Barrie if he is a serviceable No.4 might not be the worst thing. Can flip him at the deadline for picks. If he is getting signed as a bottom pairing d-man, then a hard pass. Rather give those minutes to the younger guys.
