Honestly you look at the cut throat leagues like the NFL then you see a guy like monahan get 27.5 million dollars guaranteed and makes you realize why there were 2 lockouts in last 20 years.
NHL owners and GMs can't help themselves.

Not gonna lie. I know they're both on the back half, but this kinda hurts a bit.
They both should have been here forever, with Monny as our captain.
Happy it wasn't us at this term and deal, but yea. Heart still feels a tang of pain

If Monahan stays healthy in CBJ, I think he'll rebound quite nicely with Gaudreau. The problem with the Flames earlier on during their rebuild was the team was small. Monahan centering 2 or more small forwards. He was just punished going to the dirty areas. Cripes, by the end his tenure as a Flames, I thought his career is over. I'm just glad he's able to come back. I'm rooting for him and Gaudreau in CBJ uniforms. Wished the Flames could've signed him in this free agency.

Interesting that WPG wasn't able to keep him considering they are a competitive team. I would have liked for WPG to keep him but that contract doesn't seem to be one that they would be comfortable doing.
Makes you wonder sometimes about some players, how much do they really really want to win and how much are they willing to forgo to help facilitate that when you have the option.
Not specifically referring to Monahan but in some ways if winning is your primary objective, why some players choose some teams over others for a little more money/term it's baffling.

Both Johnny and Mony are post-apex, I don't think they will move the needle much.

Like Monahan a lot - good for him!
I think Johnny has let his game slide too much in 2 years time. Don’t think he’ll turn it around as (from the very little I saw of him) he doesn’t out the effort in l like he used to. Got used to losing. Paid to be the guy, and he became a Johnny Huberdeau lite. Just don’t think he will be able to flip the switch again. Monahan however has been playing conpetitive and with a recently competitive team in Winnipeg. Pretty sure he will will do well… time will tell…

I expect Columbus to start turning the corner with Wadell and McLellan there now.

If the city of Columbus was in Canada it would be considered a gem, it's actually a very nice place and would remind you of Calgary, there's even a Tim Hortons next to the rink!

Monny just doesn't have the fire to be a Captain. He was always in neutral, emotionally, and while that can be a good thing, it's also why the big mean captains of the league kicked the Flames' asses for a lotta years. The snarl of a guy like Getzlaf, that refusal to lose coupled with a bit of a mean streak... Monahan never matched that.
Uncanny talent at the net, Monahan, but truly, not Captain material. Bennett had more in that regard.
Crazy contract, surely looking for some magic chemistry.

Interested in thoughts on the current captain then...

He was healthy, had 26 goals and 59 points last year. Without Gaudreau
I don’t see 5 M as crazy. Only thing is if he can stay healthy
Healthy Monny and engaged Johnny? Could be killer value

Love this move so much for the reunion of Johnny and Mony and the fact that Monahan gets big money here for himself and his family. Just a beauty of a player and human, Sean is. I believe he does work with Big Brothers Big Sisters Toronto here. Will always be a fan of Monahan!

Doesn't the city have a horrifically massive gun and crime problem?
EDIT: Their population looks to be substantially lower than Calgary (0.9 versus 1.3 million) but crazy higher murders. Like triple digits versus 20ish in Calgary per year.
Hell, 4 suspects sent 10 other people to the hospital with gun wounds in one mass shooting just a few days ago.
That's a hell of a polished turd "gem".

I wouldn’t consider that to be a selling point but to each their own.

I think almost every American city near or over a million people is triple digit murders per year.

The metropolitan area of Columbus has more than 2,000,000 people. The area is quite bigger than Calgary.
But it is a very unsafe city, even by US standards.
