I am 100% fine with this. If the area scout is really high on him after viewing him so many times, then I am happy with it.
As for Justin Poirier - I am mixed on him. I was high on him for a while as well, until I learned that he is rather buff already. Gives me a tonne of Rocco Grimaldi vibes. Time will tell if the Flames made the right call or not, and it will probably take a few years at least to even start seeing the results either way.
This was a fantastic draft, and if the Flames decided to pick this kid here among the others, who knows? Might be a fantastic 'swing for the fences' story about him to look back on.

Actually he was almost 19 (3 months short) if you would really want to be accurate.

The pick was fine...but I do have to wonder if this guy wouldn't have been there in the 6th.
Would have loved a home run swing at Kiviharju at this spot

Yeah it reminds people of Boltmann, too early to gamble for an unknown guy like that . kiviharju, Poirrier or even Misa was still there.
At the end , none of them matter but it felt like a bad gamble at the time

The least inspiring thing about the pick is the school he’s going to. Niagara has barely ever developed an AHLer from what I can tell. It’s not a place serious NHL prospects go. I’d have more confidence if he were to go to a CIS school, take the Derek Ryan path.
In positive news though, he lead all the tournaments he played in this year in scoring, and looks to have shined at the WJAC.
In terms of the opportunity cost, two of Vancouver’s picks profile pretty similarly, Patterson and Romani. It will be interesting to watch the development.

I think that people who slag the OJHL, AJHL and adjacent leagues have never stepped on the ice with folks who played in those leagues. These are no longer leagues for aspiring boxers and over weight gym class hero's with soft hands.
You need to be a great hockey player to make it that far, and better still to lead the league.

I'm more familiar with players who have come out of the AJHL and BCHL but that may be due to a Western bias; which NHL players have come out of the OJHL?

Hoskin was not shocked to be picked by the Flames. Of all the NHL teams that spoke to him and his representative, they were the most persistent. “The main team,” as he put it.

Well, frankly it shouldn't.
Boltmann had zero offense in his game, this guy led his league in scoring.

Drafted out of the OJHL as an overaged player?

Danforth would be a model. Same OJ team, played his draft+2 in OJ, eventually made it!
Would be interesting to see who else played all their junior there. Hyman did his draft+1. Jooris did his +2 there. Patrick Kudla is the only other even semi notable guy who played OJ at 19 that I could find.

It's a gamble for sure. They are hoping that he is a hidden gem and late bloomer. It's a 'swing for the fences' pick, which is completely fine for a 4th rounder.

This!
In the top three rounds i think you stick pretty close to your list and draft lists. By the time your at the bottom of the third your picking on your educated guesses and probably some gut instinct. I think this is where one scout or another going hey we really need to get this guy should be listened to.
As always i look at what the player is in context. Good size, good skater, has some scoring ability, leading his league. Not sure what people expect by round four?

The Hockey News posted a story about Hoskin today. It sounds like Doran was the scout that really wanted him. He didn't expect to be so impressed with an OJHL player. It will be a really good story if this kid pans out. I love it when a player takes the off roads and still find a way.

Terrific article! Thanks for sharing. Right shot, RW who has the tools and tenacity. Will be fascinating to see if he can translate to NCAA. Worthy gamble in the 4th round. Ceiling might just surprise us all.
