I have not so fond memories of that while going to games with my Dad.

They need to bring back the Canadian Airlines flying plane during intermission

People in their early 40s remember the pixelated cowboy.

IIRC, this is the history of the Saddledome scoreboards...
  1. Matrix board: 1983 - 1995 (12 years)
  2. Sony Jumbotron: 1995 - January 2007 (11.5 years)
  3. Energy Board: January 2007 - 2024 (17.5 years)
  4. Sportsnet Scoreboard: 2024 - Saddledome wrecking ball (3 years?)

The first game I attended after the Energy Board was installed was Conroy's first game back with the Flames.

With them mentioning a new scoreboard will be specifically designed for the new arena, I wonder if that one will be a "halo" style board similar to the one in the Clippers' new arena and the football stadium in LA?

Maybe they cut a deal with Daktronics to provide this one for the last couple of seasons in the Dome if they buy a massive halo for the new building.

The new scoreboard had its issues. The stats on the bottom of the screen were too small. Some people mentioned that the safety net around the back blocked the bottom of the score clock, so you could not see the time or the penalties ( they were too small). Also, a strange ad for the Sidecar Lounge showed a menu that was not readable at the end of the commercial. "What is this a scoreboard for ants"?

It's pre-season for the new Jumbotron too.

scores aside from when I've seen (not at a Flames game) the clarity and size of the thing makes for far better replays

I found myself watching the screen instead of the live action at times. It is REALLY clear and crisp (and big)

As for the stats at the bottom, yes, they were very poorly presented, but that is a programming problem and not heh fault of the screen

It has a guaranteed spot. It doesn't have to put in any effort.

Pish-tosh. What are machines for, if not to take the blame for human errors?

It also has a cap hit that goes down every year!

The screen is awesome. They need to ditch the live stats crap that is too small to read, make the penalty time clock bigger as it was also too small and ditch the live 50/50 jackpot from there as well as it's just too busy. Roll the 50/50 jackpot during tv timeouts and intermission. Honestly I'm here for the hockey game not to watch the jackpot grow. I'm sure they'll get it right. Great investment.

I have the same complaint about some of the broadcasts- the scrolling news ticker on Bally, that augmented reality shot speed thing on TNT… less is more people!

During the Flames pregame, Weegar also said the Flames have new boards.

Could see some interesting bounces,

There seemed to be a few new things and fixed up things. It looked like the old dome got some love this summer. The scoreclock and some of the lighting. The clocks, like the actual time of day clocks at each end are new. The lighted signs on the super suites are new. There were a few touches I noticed and others I'm sure I didn't.

Makes sense. With certainty now as to the remaining lifespan of the building, those tweaks can be done, ideally with equipment and pieces that can be carried over to the new building in some capacity.

The new scoreboard will move over and repurposed somehow, my guess is if they got new boards now, those will be used maybe in the community rink in 3 years time. Same with the new time of day clocks etc.
