The Talking Heads definitely changed and evolved their sound over time. There was a whole afro-beats era to their catalog.

Maybe a little more obscure but Fates Warning evolved a tonne over the years, starting with a bit of an Iron Maiden sound then finding their own voice and continuing to change.

The Tea Party went downhill quite quick once they picked up keyboards and electronics

Post Malone.
Probably not what anyone here listens to, but a good modern example of a guy going from rapper to a whole bunch or different things, lots of guitar and random genre collaborations.
Not sure how much of it is good, but fits the criteria.

I actually liked the first two albums too. Just knowing what they would become taints them now.

Clocks is the only track I can still get down with.

I think the Tragically Hip evolved, and I actually prefer their later albums.

Agreed. They started out as a gritty meat & potatoes bar band (and a very good one). But right around the mid-90s they evolved into more of an arty, psychedelic alt-rock band with albums like Day for Night and Trouble at the Henhouse, culminating in Phantom Power which to me is the perfect blend of the band's straight-ahead rock foundation and Downie's more poetic/arty sensibilities.

Their final album Man Machine Poem was outstanding IMO. It's heartbreaking that their career was cut short while they were putting out such interesting late career material.

Not many bands evolve in a way that they’re still listenable to. It seems like as they become more proficient in their craft, it becomes a bit much.

Prince, he was awesome until like the Batman soundtrack then he became an acquired taste.

Beatles truly evolved during their time together and made great albums that you could enjoy, but McCartney kind of reverted while the rest of them kept growing after the breakup.

Green Day peaked with American Idiot.

American idiot was a pretty big departure from what they’d been doing previously, sound wise they kinda reverted back a little after that but I don’t think they had any 9 minute songs or concept albums before that one, not sure about since though since I kinda stopped following them after that. Even though I enjoyed that album.

We are the same had a wonderful country vibe to it.

Does Daft Punk count? Random Access Memories is fantastic and is much more groovy vs their hardcore electronic stuff in the late 90s.

Ok I'll give you Jesus of suburbia, it was a neat experimentation on their part.

I saw American Idiot as them adopting the superior production value of other big pop punk bands at the time more than a huge departure.

That alone can draw appeal out of bands that people (general mainstrem audiences) weren't seeing before.

They already had iconic anthemic tracks before that like Minority. The production value was just lagging a bit behind the rest of the game.

The most recent album pretty much comes full circle. It's a lot like the old stuff but with less of the edgy-ness of their younger years. Still good. But it demonstrates how evolution wasn't really a prominent feature of the band

You can probably count Alanis Morrissette. Her earlier stuff was pretty much cookie cutter standard pop and evolved into more a rock musician. I didn't listen to her later stuff, but i understand that is is quite different as well.

With Green Day, I think they just became better song writers in general. I like their early stuff, but it is a little more basic. I don't think their overall sound changed that much.
