The 50% retention is actually kind of big because it doesn't really change the Markstrom situation in the summer.

It likely would just mean that Vanecek would be coming back as part of any trade, which always made more sense than retention IMO anyways.

If this is the going rate the Flames need to move Vladar now. He's at least on par with Allen imo. I'd gladly take a 2nd/3rd round pick for him.

I’d be infuriated if I were a Devils fan. Allen is a backup. Markstrom was right there for the taking and they got Allen? Terrible move IMO because New Jersey could have pulled a Markstrom deal a few weeks ago.

I still think the Flames have to trade Markstrom.

Retaining Markstrom and playing him next season will likely mean the Flames lose their 11th-15th overall pick in 2025, and instead get to enjoy Florida's 28th-32nd.

Flames need to secure a bottom-10 pick next year.
