That was a fun game. Nobody giving Vegas enough credit. That's an elite team that is able to turn up the pressure. Imo, it's not a coaching failure or even a lack of talent, more just that there are two teams on the ice and there will be swings of momentum.

Zary and Sharangovich with really good games. Kadri too.

I actually thought Huberdeau was pretty good tonight. A few egregious giveaways but he made a lot of quality passes and fought for pucks too.

I mentioned this in the game thread but Hanifin's mis-read on Stone's rush goal was inexcusable. Much worse than Oesterle on the fifth goal.

Wolf was really good. Lots of very tough chances against and he gave them a chance to win. He's only going to get better too.

I'd be shopping Dube and Mangiapane. Those two have dropped off terribly.

Two competitive games against elite teams where the team deserved to win both, the young guys played well, and our draft position wasn’t ruined. Best outcome right now, IMO.

I know it’s been beaten to death, but yeesh. I am so sick of watching the following players:

Huberdeau
Lindholm
Mangiapane
Dube

I contemplated adding Backlund to that list but the guy bleeds Flames. Couldn’t bring myself to put him there, though my head says we should have just moved on and handed the reigns over to a younger captain.

A young captain is how you become the Oilers.

Backlund's fine.

The rest of those guys though.. yikes.

Caught the highlights, the Flames looked bad. Dumb defense leading to goals against while bouncing fluke goals past Thompson. Thought Wolf wasn’t great overall on the goals against but he did make some great stops otherwise.

The Knights can make it work with Brayden Pachal/Ben Hutton eating minutes on the bottom pair, there’s no reason why Gilbert/Solo/Oesterle/Desimone can’t provide baseline NHL minutes if properly supported.

18, 15, and 14 minutes of ice time respectively tonight. All were a +/- of 0.
All in all, pretty solid outing for those guys against a strong Vegas team and after playing last night vs Colorado (well 2 of them).

Toews was captain at 20 and won 3 cups.

Crosby won three cups and was a 19 year old captain.

Landeskog won a cup and was a 19 year old captain.

Obviously we don’t have anyone remotely of that caliber on our team right now, but we did. I think not naming a captain after Gio left was a mistake. The leadership group should have been handed over to Tkachuk and Gaudreau.

I think it’s outdated thinking that you need a veteran leadership group. The NHL is a young man’s league now. These kids have been groomed to be leaders for years. If you have a young core, hand the team over to them.

Just make them play some games before handing them letters. Otherwise nothing is earned.

Connor McDavid was the youngest captain in league history and look at the success he has had.

To those complaining about defence:

Gilbert, DeSimone, Osterle.

What the hell do you expect? That’s a defensive lineup of a rebuilding team. No way around it. Stop expecting more this season. This year is about the future.

Mark stone is such a f***ing loser. I'm surprised he didn't go on LTIR for a stick touching his knee and his resulting dive earlier in the game. He has the most punchable facial
expressions in the NHL. Every goal he gets results in a stanley-cup-winning facial expression. I bet when he gets a man-cold he makes agonized facial expressions to his wife.

Sportsnet doesn't show the head-shot to coleman at all on the highlight package. Just goals.
Imagine if McDarling took the high hit that Coleman did??? There'd be fifteen SN replays, followed by an NHL inquistion. Then a five game suspension for the offendender.

Plenty of thing to not like either tonight. Gameplans and coverages are bad. Dzone coverage and PP are really really bad. At least try putting the players with heat in the sticks on the 1st pp and start auditioning other guys for #1 pp time. Guys like Weegar and Solovyov would be interesting Auditions.

Watching the fan base turn on Huberdeau is alarming. His play isn't as bad as the pitchfork and torch crowd is saying it is but it isn't great either. Coaches need to adjust for him instead of making him adjust to them.

All in all, losses are great, higher the draft pick the better. Plus it hastens the departures of players on the way out. On the flip side, it's nice to see the effort is there and that the kids are alright and the future is bright.
Best, most thoughtful and logical post I've seen all day.
