Ah, finally. Saw the thread, started perusing. Funny that Markstrom misses a practice for ‘maintenance’, and they call up Wolf the next day, and it takes to post 53 until Cali jumps in and flags the coincidence

Its almost certainly just temporary when the Flames intend to have Wolf make a start.
Wolf can prove himself ready for the NHL, and the Flames dont have to rush a decision that may cost them an asset, or getting to little back for an asset.

I'm sure the plan has always been to have Wolf up with the big club periodically and platoon him into more games to see what they really have in him.
If Markstrom needs a day or two this is the perfect opportunity to have an excuse and get Wolf a start.

I keep seeing this being said, I'll admit he's been better than last season in making a few more timely saves when the defense has forgotten their roles, but he still hasn't been consistently good let alone "Solid"...

I could see Vladar moved in this road trip, but in a larger deal.

I was thinking the same thing before the season started. But Markstrom has played great and Vladar has been shakey.
But if the strategy to remake the roster is to try and see which AHL guys can play on the big club (Zary, Coronato, Pelletier, Duehr, Pelletier, Desimone, Pospisil, Wolf, Ruzicka, Gilbert)and slowly start moving out underperforming vets. Or at least higher priced vets who aren’t better than the cheaper AHL equivalents I’d be all for that.
After watching guys like Zary and Pospisil lately I’m not really sure why you wouldn’t do it. Worst case you free up cap space to go after a free agent or two after this season. The Flames need a game breaker. I do not see one in the organization. After the horrible start I would use this season as an extended training camp. With moves through the season and a big move or two in the offseason.
I do hope that is what happens. Because the current group is definitely missing something. But the young Wrangler players do show a bunch of promise.

GOAT!

Recognizing that Markstrom has for sure looked better this year, he's still lagging far behind. It's just that last year was exceptionally bad, so "better than last year" is still near the bottom of the pack.

Last season (min games played: 20)

16th: Kuemper, 9.8
40th: Markstrom, -3.1
This season (min games played: 3)
1st: Demko, 13.5
16th: Johansson, 2.3
31st: Markstrom, 0.6

Yeah that was the oddest thing.
The backup goalie has always been injury protection. You don't call up a goalie prospect for a road trip for injury protection or we'd see it all the time.
"Heading East, better bring a third goalie!"

Have never understood how some fans just pick a few players that they have to ride regardless of actual outcomes.
So strange.

Injury protection could also mean that they don't want to expose an asset to the possibility of injury so they've called up someone to fill the slot that the protected asset would normally fill.
Translation: Wolf is called up because they don't want to risk injuring Vladar if a backup goalie needs to be called upon.
Just pulling that out of me arse.

Came here to post pretty much this lol
Bringing a 3rd goalie on the road for injury protection....isn't a thing.
Strange things are afoot at the Circle K.

Having argued all summer about keeping Wolf up, I think this is the scenario that everyone else had in mind. Get him a start and some time with the big club. Its a bit of a sloppy 3 headed monster, but at this point his development needs to take a higher priority. Especially with the slow start by the team.
My one worry as a huge Wolf fan is that the in consistency of ups and downs could prevent him from getting into a groove and cause his play to not be stellar. Which then means he's back down for the rest of the year.
I still think a Markstrom/Wolf duo is what the Flames need going forward. While it could suck to lose Vladar for little or nothing, I am just not convinced that slowing down Wolfs development is worth that. (and yes I know Wolf has had a good attitude about it all and he's 'still young' for a goalie)

People want Wolf up and they get mad about the inevitable carrying of 3 goalies to do it.

I hope they baby Wolf by giving him easier games to get his feet wet in. They have no choice as he’s arguably the most valuable piece going into the future.
If they do deal Markstrom or Vladar ease this guy in.

His GAA and SV% are nearly identical to last year... he's not giving up goals on the first shot he faces like he was last year and the rest of the team have been playing worse so he doesn't stick out like a sore thumb as much as he did last year.
I would say that he's been slightly better then last year (factoring in the play in front of him) but I wouldn't proclaim him "solid".
