It really depends on if he could be had for a Kadri or a Huberdeau. I don't expect Gaudreau to be the Gaudreau that left, but it will shorten the rebuild window IMO.
I don't see it as a likely scenario. Too many NMCs, and I don't think CBJ want either Kadri or Huberdeau.

I'll trade Huberdeau and Mangiapane for Gaudreau and Laine. I'm not sure which team needs to add, but Gaudreau - Lindholm - Laine should work fine.

The rumour is that Johnny and his immediate family (though fair to say that Noa likely has no opinion) are not fans of Columbus and wish they were here instead. Certainly adds some air of reality to the OP's question, but still feels like a stretch.

All good points. But you acted like it was not even a debate. There are some points in opposition.
1. He’s created even less offence than Huberdeau this year.
2. I doubt he and Lindholm do much better without the third leg of Tkachuk or Monahan.
3. I think “morale boost” is pretty debatable. Huberdeau seems pretty popular in the room especially with younger guys. And with Weegar.
4. The term difference is true and I’ve mentioned it.
5. Cheaper is true and it’s why he won’t do it - he makes about the same in after tax dollars.

That’s why you trade them Lindholm for picks and prospects/good young players.

lol, Gaudreau is as well-spoken as ever. When discussing being benched:
“Not my first time, won’t be my last,” Gaudreau said. “Or … hopefully it’s my last."

I don't think these are relatively close. Taking Johnny back for a 1 for 1 would be a no brainer. Don't allow spite to affect decision-making for such major trades.

Don't allow spite to affect decision-making, but do show the league players can treat us like #### and we'll take you back a year later?

Hm, that's intriguing. So that's why Boomer was making a ruckus about "come back Johnny!" on multiple occasions.
I thought they were just ####ing around.
If there's an appetite from the gaudreaus to return, I'd see the biggest obstacles then being Huberdeau green lighting a move to Columbus (we'd have to pray he's reeally not enjoyed his time here, which it appears he hasn't), but more importantly Murray not blocking it out of feeling spurned from before.

When we get Gaudreau then we can trade Lindholm, Gaudreau and even Laine for futures. That way I rid Huberdeau's contract.

Murray would be happy saving money on signing bonus. That’s for sure.

I'd see Murray thinking his team selling its product would take precedence over personal grievances. It's been long enough that both sides probably have come to realize that they're much worse off apart.
Besides, Treliving is gone so it makes it a little less awkward.

Murray Edwards would kybosh any trade. Johnny burned his bridges with this team and the owner. It aint happening.

Nobody, but that's an unreal package back. Totally unrealistic to expect it.

I would definitely be happy if Johnny came back but one of the long term deals has to be going the other way. Huberdeau would be my preference but I would be fine with Kadri as well. I think Kadri makes more sense since they need a center, and allegedly targeted him first before realizing they had a shot at Gaudreau. Biggest snag is that Kadri would say no to that trade. I don’t think he wants out and enjoys playing in a Canadian market. He had a chance to go there for more money. I know he turned down Calgary once in a trade before saying yes to a co tract but he had $49M reasons to say yes the second time.
I could maybe see Huberdeau saying yes because of how terrible it has gone here and going back east and getting to play with Fantilli could be enough for him to sign off. 2 more years of term and $750k higher cap hit leads me to think the Flames add something if it were possible.
As for Johnny I did hear something along the lines of he and his family regret their decision but it was also not long after Sutter was fired and aconroy was hired here and Babcock was hired there. I wouldn’t be surprised if he felt the same way.

I would absolutely add a piece to incentivise Columbus to swap JG for JH. Maybe Kek sees the Jackets having the right type of players to make Huberdeau effective. There's absolutely a chance that he is revives his game there. It's undeniable that the mix in Calgary just isn't right.
