I know you are saying that in jest, but there is way more truth to that than you know.

I meet more people off this website IRL than probably any user here. Usually about 10 a year. I have built business relationships with I'd guess at least 100 posters on this site over the years and deal with them every few years or so when they need to upgrade their car or get service etc...

I'd say 2/3-3/4 of them have stopped posting on the site, and every single time the same reasoning comes up. How far left and hostile certain member of the board became. They made the site completely unenjoyable for anyone that had any sort of conservative opinion. These aren't mouth breathing hillbillies either. Successful, upper middle class, and even some very well off and couple well known local people who stayed anonymous.

It wasn't enough to simply disagree, it always had to be filled with petty insults and the insinuation anyone who wasn't in the little woke brigade or whatever it was, is a mouth breathing moron. I am also not the only person that these people came after for not adhering to the groupthink and had two different users on two separate occasions email false accusations to my employer. It's the reason I fell of the face of the earth for a couple years, and the reason I only post once in a blue moon now.

The site was taken over by a bunch of leftist bullies berating anyone with a remotely conservative opinion. It's very easy to see too. Just look at any political poll on the site. They always lean super left, and totally contradict any poll of the general population of Alberta.

It's a harsh truth, but it's what eroded the user base.

Anyway, this is a thread about pop-up ads which personally, I don't care about. It's a free site that has bills to pay. Maybe offer a premium membership for say $20 bucks a year to go Ad free. I'd have no issue with something like that. This site has provided a great service to fans especially on the hockey side of the forum that it should be remunerated. Nothing good is free.

I don't think it's fair to try to make it a left vs right issue, when it comes to something like politics if you can't stand to have your views questioned then don't share them. I became public enemy #1 in the gun control thread but aside from a few trolls the discussion remained mostly civil because I could back up my opinions.

There's definitely some truth to your overall sentiment though. My biggest complaint about CP has always been how much leeway trolls get, but if you swear too much look out!

Honestly, things have improved recently. People seem to be a bit more respectful but I’m not sure why.

I like reading people like Pepsifree, rubecube, Formerpres opinions about things. They don’t conform with my own views and they don’t conform with the views of people I work with on a daily basis. But that’s a good thing. If coming here just reinforced the same #### I hear daily, I would likely look elsewhere more.

One of the people who came after pylon was that insane person JobHopper, who also stalked a few other posters. That had nothing to do with the woke far left. It's such a nonsense thing. The site is effectively dying because it's old and no one signs up anymore because it's almost impossible to do so.

When you get the opportunity to speak to people face to face in privacy, and truly feel a person out for who they are, you get a much different conversation a publicly recorded and indexed conversation on a message board. The statement "I haven't seen you on the board in ages." Is almost always followed up with some sort of iteration of "Yeah, it just got way to left, commie, socialist, poisonous....." or some iteration of.

Also like many of these people, I am trying to run a business, and don't have the time to sit at my desk for 6 hours engaging in an argument about pronouns or gun control, and just opt to become a spectator when I have a few minutes to kill. I've got 65 people relying on me to do my job and do it well, and wasting time or risking that over some troll trying to get a rise out of me with petty insults just isn't worth it anymore.

It's not about having views questioned, it's the means in which they are. Do I agree with Yoho? No. Do I agree with how people pile on him, and create actual threads asking for his removal from the board? Also no. Also the mods shouldn't have allowed it.

I want people with different opinions here. I want to hear what they have to say. I want to figure out what makes them tick. What I do not want is to come to an echo chamber where everyone adheres to the same line of thinking at the penalty of being tarred, feathered, doxxed and humiliated for not doing so. That same methodology of punishing opinions outside the group narrative is exactly the reason people label this group as a bunch of lefties. Because that's exactly how socialist and communist societies work. Get in line... or else. And those personal attacks are almost exclusive to that segment of this site.

It ruined CP and drove away users. Now you get pop-up ads to pay the bills.

CP asks for a work email and/or multiple forms of personal social media to sign up, it's insanely intrusive. Can't tell you what the genesis of it is but it's incredibly short sighted. It has successfully choked new membership and we've seen the results (btimbits post) one or two legitimate new members a year with a natural outgoing of members (a cycle is normal) has ground the site to a halt. Hardly the "woke far left".

I'd say ban happy mods who banned long time posters like FDW, Resolute, 4x4 didn't help all in a desire to protect Peter12 during covid didn't help

I agree the site is dying because the community is very toxic, I just don't see it as a left vs right thing. You see the same level of toxicity in the hockey section where personal views have little to do with the discussion

Side note, but people #### all over yoho because he fits the definition of a troll to a tee, not because he's conservative.

There are dickwads on both sides as far as opinion goes, I'll give you that. But the usual 4 or 5 suspects with "Smartest man in the room syndrome." that always take it too far with the insults and toxicity are very much on the left side of the argument.

Boiling it down to left vs right is utterly insane to be honest.

Because the collective misery around the Flames has actually drawn people together.

It isn't THE reason, but it certainly is A reason.

Society is frikking falling apart because of hyper bipartisanship and people unable to figure out a way to meet in the middle. Why would this place be immune?

There are certainly a few posters that come to mind that can't disagree or discuss something without trying to make the other person feel stupid. But maybe I just have a different perspective since I have opinions all over the political spectrum. I see the same thing from certain 'right-leaning' posters as well. I'd say the problem isn't the left, the problem is just #######s. And there's definitely a lot of them
