I hope not, but people were concerned about the term on Tanev. He'd be older than Tanev is now at the end of it.

Luckily that deal did work out pretty well.

why are we investing into this core again?
The flames are desperately lacking STAR power, I like Noah but he already voiced his displeasure for wanting to be here and preferring to be in the U.S which I can respect.

I'd rather use him to bring on draft picks and young star prospects.

I couldn't agree more. Giving Hanifin max term and a big dollar amount is a terrible idea. He is the most overrated player on the roster.

Also if true, this seems like a rookie mistake by Conroy. Why not wait till later on in the season to see where the team is before handing out major contracts?

Around in circles we go.

If management is against blowing it up, might as well. Better off than a Gudbranson type overpay or Tyler Myers type they’ll go after.

Keep us at being a team with a coin flip to win each night.

The mediocrity will never stop in this market

I bet Hanifin gets around 7x7 from a desperate team on the open market so I think flames get him a bit under 7 for 8 years.

Ugh...I'm not against signing Hanifin, depending on the numbers, but if you sign Hanifin then you have to kiss Lindhom good-bye.

We already have too many old players. Honestly...how many guys pushing 35+ do you want to have on the roster for the next ~decade or so?

Hanifin is only 26 (turns 27 in January). If they signed him to max 8 years, he will only be 35 when the contract is up, which isn't bad. I wouldn't be surprised if the extension is shorter though.

It all depends on dollar amount and cap hit of course. IMO, Hanifin has been one of the better players so far this season and is just entering his prime. I'd be thrilled with an extension if the cap hit is fair.

Not sure how they can afford everyone on long term deals

Huberdeau
Kadri
Weegar
Hanifin
Lindholm

Something has got to give

Thats not the point, in principle I agree, but really? We have already committed to too many elderly gentlemen.

Yeah, that would be okay if it wasn't already an ancient roster. The Flames are basically being hoarders.

What makes you think Hanifin is old? If the Flames do sign him for 8 years, he'll turn 35 midway through the last season of the deal. Age-wise, he's the least of the team's problems.

Its not about that, its another roster spot thats locked up for 8 years.

Who cares how old Hanifin is if the rest of the team is collecting Old Age Security? He could be a bargain, but he'd still be an almost immovable piece on an ageing team.

Like it or not, this is our core. I’m guessing Lindholm gets done too.

I mean, you might as well.

You ink Hanifin...thats the last 'good' contract available...if you do that you might as well ink Lindholm and this team is going to suck for a decade.

Based on NHL.com's figures for opening-day rosters, the Flames have an average age of 28.5. They are tied with the Rangers for the 11th oldest roster in the league.

Los Angeles, Tampa Bay, Colorado, Dallas, the Islanders, Washington, Minnesota, Seattle, Carolina, and Pittsburgh are all older.

The league mean is 28.1, with a median of 28.25.

This isn't an ancient roster.

Now, if Trevor Lewis (36), Milan Lucic (34), Michael Stone (32), and Tyler Toffoli (30) were still on the roster, you might have a case. As it is, I think you've carried over your impression of the team's age from last year.

So because other players are old, Hanifin magically becomes untradeable? How's that one work?

Okay, if the cap structure wasn't already awful then.

Moving of goalposts duly noted.

Which teams, except those in the bottom of rebuilds, have a good cap structure? The entire league is basically hosed in that respect.
