I don't think butterfly was accusing someone of racism. But if you've never heard of a Gong show, it could sound Oriental and therefore be based on a race thing/
I've never seen someone confused by the term gong show before haha.
That phrase was common place in like junior high. Maybe butterfly isn't Canadian, though? And yeah, what a bizzare place to go with hearing a new phrase. "is that racist slang?".

It’s important to be offended when someone asks if something is racist, because that’s progress.

Reminds me of a guy on our hockey pool message board who had "Mind as well give me the money" as his sig for YEARS. It has become the only way I can say the phrase now. My kids say "Mind as well" instead of the proper "might as well." English is so good.
Gong show has been a pretty consistent piece of Canadian hockey vernacular for at least 20 years
Makes sense, I grew up there but haven't lived there for 15 years.

Pretty much. I have legitimately never heard anyone say that. Sounded like an Asian slur to me. Sorry all.

PSA, we don't use Oriental anymore... for the last probably 20 years, I'd guess?
Is that considered racist, by the people that decide such things? I thought it was just someone from the region considered the Orient. Much like “Asian”.

I'm Asian or "Oriental" back in the 80s and I'm not offended by the word, "Oriental", but admit it is funny when someone uses it lol.

Do people not know the basis of the term Gong Show?
It was a TV show that started in the late 70s
From Wikipedia:
In this amateur talent contest, three celebrity panelists audition a series of acts - some good, some hilariously awful, all nonprofessional - and cut off the losers mid-performance by striking an enormous onstage gong.
