At age 22 (most are drafted at 17/18) you've now had 4-5 years in the pro's to prove if you've got it... it is what it is. It's more uncommon to have someone break out at 24+ than it is to have someone bust @ 22.

What about Hunt/Schwindt leads you to believe that either of them have a chance to produce at an NHL level? It's not unreasonable at all, its the sad truth honestly.
calling a 22 year old currently on an NHL roster a career AHLer is...well, stupid to be frank
Zary and Pelletier are also 22, career AHLers? lol

Most players don't play pro hockey at 18 and zero play at 17 in NA fyi so your 4-5 years thing is ridiculous

as for Hunt he has already played over 200 NHL games "career AHLer" derp

True.

It is, of course, entirely possible that Schwindt tops out as a good AHLer and can't cut it in the NHL. He didn't show enough this preseason to prove otherwise.

But it's also entirely possible that he continues to improve and becomes an NHL regular. I'm not convinced he's there yet… the operative word being ‘yet’.

The worst you can say is that he has been an AHLer so far… which is something you could say about most NHL players at one time or another.

The worst you can say about Hunt is that he's a career tweener: 202 games in the NHL, 246 in the AHL (and two in the ECHL). For whatever reason, he hasn't stuck with an NHL club so far, except the '21-22 Rangers.

Hunt is on his 6th team and getting less and less ice time as he moved on so at this time, his time is almost run out.

Schwindt has no pedigree to speak off. Nothing to say he can be more than a scrub but you never know. Hathaway and Dueher was a surprise. If he is going to do something he needs to do it now though.

Too bad Pelletier was injured. This would have been a good opportunity year for him. Maybe a solid middle six.

Zary has been up and down as a prospect. I don’t have hope for him as a top 6 surprise any more because of his inconsistency but that’s just me. If you can’t even get a look on this roster, it speaks a lot about you.

What line do you think Zary fits on with the big club?

While I actually don't have an issue with Zary being sent down and don't think it necessarily means he's not a future NHLer, there's nothing wrong with starting someone on the 4th line and getting them some games in and seeing if they can work their way up.

Both Joe Thornton and Vinny Lecavalier did it (although it helped get TB's coach fired), and they seemed to do just fine. Pavel Bure's first game was with Ryan Walter and Gino Odjick. There are lots of examples of this.

It would undoubtedly allow him to see the game differently.

I worry about a guy like Zary. His time as a professional has shown he needs to be a driver and not a chaser, and he likes to have the puck on his stick. It wouldn't be the worst thing in the world to teach him how to defend and track pucks. But that has yet to be his game so far. I worry about giving him the Sam Bennett treatment and not allowing him to drive his own play -- round hole in square peg.

Huska's message for the late cuts last week was "be ready." So, hopefully, he's taking it to heart.

The Flames are actually decently deep in terms of top nine forwards ... certainly not league leading in the top three, but depth.

Zary not making "this roster" isn't a slight at all.

Tell me you know nothing about Connor Zary without telling me you know nothing about Connor Zary.

Who said anything about Zary or Pelletier not being good? Both guys should be on the team ahead of the 2 guys this discussion is about.

Zary and Pelletier have both shown they have the skills that should translate to the NHL, both of them have had solid rookie numbers in their first year pro.

On the other hand both Hunt (6th organization right now) and Schwindt (4th “pro” season) have yet to show any sort of higher level promise.

Schwindt would not be on any other NHL roster today, he wouldn’t even be on Calgary if Pelletier wasn’t hurt, so why all of a sudden do you act like he’s going to save this team?

I’d have Zary, Klapka, Pelletier ahead of him and I’d take about 3-4 different waiver wire fodder this far over both Schwindt and Hunt at this point.

Neither of these 2 guys have any sort of long term future with the Flames.

**Schwindt sent down to Wranglers, guess he’s back to his career AHL trajectory, 3 career NHL games shouldn’t classify you as an NHL’r should it?**

Yeah, I think Greer could be nice alongside Ruzicka and Duehr. He’s a left-handed LW. Can anyone who has watched him tell me what kind of player this is? He’s got size. I’m also hoping for some speed and aggression.

surprised no one took Calle Rosen. He had a great season with the Blues; great skater, very good outlet pass.

Interesting that the Panthers lose another guy, first Denisenko and now Ludvig. Some depth gone, could see them claiming someone.

Can’t see how flames would go from offering a 2 year contract to not wanting him for free on waivers. I have my doubts flames offered him a 2 year deal

Waiting for someone to post about Greer - want to hear that he has good wheels and a constant motor. Though I am guessing with that size, if he had good wheels, he wouldn't be available.

Considering that Hunt/Schwindt offers very little, IMO, it's an easy bar to get over

If they offered JAD a two year contract and he chose a one year with the Kings, doesn’t that mean he’s not really interested in playing in Calgary? Why would you claim him then?

Also, is there really any difference between JAD and Zary? They seem redundant so why block the prospect you’ve been developing? JAD is very similar to what the Flames have a lot of: AHL/NHL tweeners with small to average size and some good skill but suited to play in the top 9.

Flames clearly had a need for some truculence on the 4th line and Greer is a very good option for that role. He lost a lot of fights but that’s also because he fought legit heavies way out of his weight class; that shows the character and heart of the kid.

You're mixed up. Flames offered JAD a one year, two way contract and the Kings offered him a one year, one way contract. Of course he's going to take the guaranteed NHL money on a one way.

Greer's skating is good for a 6'3" guy. Is very much a north-south type player. Has decent pedigree being drafted by the Avalanche in the second round. Never hurts to sift through that scouting staff's castaways. Definitely a late bloomer, albeit with a relatively low ceiling at the NHL level.

Bruins waived him because they have a lot of guys that fit this mold already. Knock on him is he is pretty undisciplined. The CP posters who hated Bennett for his inopportune penalties are likely going to be vocal about Greer as well in this regard.
