He's obviously not as good as Gaudreau but in his first full season Johnny went scoreless in his first 5 games getting as much as 16min TOI. I can't find the line combos for those games but I think he was on the top line right off the bat with Mony and Hudler?
Again, he's no Gaudreau be he was never really given a chance.

Johnny gave Josh Jooris a career year because they started out together that season.

You're a Calgary boy matty. Don't let the previous regime sour you on your hometown team.
Every one wanted to see you get a shot, Conroy included.

Seeing some of the quality of the unqualified RFAs, Matty might be in tough to get a contract from another team

NHL.com shows 176lb on Gerbe's player page, but he is also incredibly stocky with legs like St. Louis or Crosby.
I wonder if Yamamoto now being available for league min or cheap changes the interest-level in Phillips from other teams. It would be nice to see lil Matty back with the Flames in fall.

Nevermind Forever a Flame, his number should be retired league-wide. In every league.

I hope Phillips signs but I can’t really blame the guy for looking elsewhere. He’s been in the AHL for 5 years waiting for the opportunity to get on the big club for his hometown team and he’s only been able to get 3 games. I’d be curious about what else is out there too if I was in his shoes

Pelletier was +2 and Josh Brook who played 13 games was +10, not a great stat.

100%. This might be his only real shot proving he’s an NHLer. If I was him I’d be looking closely at all my options too.

Is it bad for me to hope he busts and lands in back in the AHL or KHL? I don't want another St. Louis or Savard situation here. I know it's highly unlikely, but what if...

I think at worst it would be more a Paul Byron situation.
To clarify I'm rooting for the guy, I just see that being his likely ceiling and I believe that's what Scorp has said too.

Yeah, but Gaudreau was absolutely electric in training camp that first year. And this was coming off of an appearance at the World Championships where he was the best player. Phillips has never looked much better than average, even in training camp.

At the very least he can say “I was offered x amount from y, #### you pay me”

All of the Phillips offers will be roughly the same. Depends on whether he wants a change of scenery or not. A fresh start elsewhere might be the best for his career..

Do you mean Brian Sutter, the guy that saw him playing at the University of Vermont and suggested that the Flames sign St Louis?

Yeah I see Byron or Sheary or something like that. Has to be in the right spot.
MSL comps have always been absurd.

Wasn't his centre Radim Zohorna in one of his games?

St. Louis was short but built like a tank.
Phillips might one day play in the NHL but I can’t imagine he’d ever amount to something we’d regret.
Even if we did, it will give us another thing to complain about Sutter with.
