Forgive me ignorance here, but what da hell???
Trelivings gone, Sutters gone, Conroy in, Huska in.
Why all of a sudden do these players want to bail? The regime has changed and they got what they wanted, yet they all want to head out.
I'm sorry but I dont get it.

I'm not saying I am sad to see them go but I thought a wholesale change is what they wanted. So it begs me to ask the question....why?

Toffoli not staying isn't really a big deal, he was actually one to defend Sutter.

Here's the thing...there were two okay outcomes:

All of them stay on reasonable deals

Or

All of them leave and you trade them now

Worst case was the mushy middle where some guys stay, which causes them not to trade anyone, and then people walk as UFAs.

The team is at a crossroads and being forced to actually trade these pieces and rebuild / retool is a good outcome too.

Firing Sutter is actually probably what tipped the scales for him

Lots of guys would be just as cheap

Players either dont want to commit or want to be overpaid

Flames are calling their bluffs IMO
I bet at least one of these guys signs

We aren't guarantied by any means of landing good trades for these players, and they may turn around and buy a whole bunch of crap on the free agency market to "keep contending" and over pay for that privilege too. That would be very Flames.

Conroy's comments today sound like he has a rebuild mindset when he references the Jarome and Bouwmeester trades.

Quote:
“It’s a big challenge, there’s no doubt about it. This is a big, big challenge,” Conroy said, sizing up this current scenario. “When I first started on this side, there was Miikka and Jarome and Bouwmeester, and that was very hard too. I look at it and we’re kind of in a similar situation right now, but there are seven guys, which is a lot.

hard not to salivate over the potential packages they could get for Lindholm, Hanifin and Toffoli. They already are on sweet deals for 23/24, and if you retain salary or with a long-term extension in place ... it's such a huge chance to really set the course for the next few years. Just don't screw this up.

They see a team spinning its tires somewhere between easy playoff out and late team to miss the postseason entirely.

Plus even though Sutter is gone, thats still a bad taste left in their mouth. The probably just want a fresh start. Hard to blame them at this point.

Probably a few things:
-They don't feel confident they're a good enough team
-They don't feel a strong direction from the organization that anyone's excited to be a part of
-They didn't like Huberdeau & Kadri getting face of the team contracts before ever playing a game

Just my guesses.
Feels like people jumping off a sinking ship.

Of course this mass exodus happens a year after Bedard is a generational prospect and we finish 16th.

In our crappy division we will be close to the playoffs next year.

Hanafin's team now.
Toffoli's team now.
Tanev's team now.
Huberdeau's team now

If this doesn't trigger the rebuild, literally nothing will. But I expect they'll try and make "hockey trades" like a bunch of idiots.

This is probably the closest thing to "Dominos!"

Hanifin was probably a one off, but once Lindholm and Backlund indicated that they want to move on and try to win elsewhere, why would everyone else stick around? It probably has less to do with the city and franchise, and more to do with the direction of the team. At Backlund and Toffolis age, why would they want to re-sign?

You've got to wonder what's going through Weegar/Kadri and Huberdeaus head.
