Things can be both silly and fun. In fact, some of the silliest things tend to also be the funniest.
Also, what kind of black and white world do you have to live in to think that believing holidays are silly = wanting people to work more? I think we should have more stat holidays AND shouldn't have to associate them with silly traditions to justify their existence.

I don't think quoting a beer marketing slogan proves the point you think it does.

I sure hope the people who made this dumb decision have already selected the dumbest among them to blame when they regain some semblance of sanity and reverse course.

This city has become a rotting husk of the great city I grew up in in the 80s, 90s and early 2000's. Its becoming almost impossible to be proud of where I am from at the moment.

OK fair enough.
But I think in our hyper-individualistic society, coming together to remind ourselves we are part of a larger group (Canada/Canadians) is a good thing. Call it nationalism, or pride, or just the need for humans to belong to a group. Being reminded that we are all connected might actually make people think outwardly and try to make our country better for everyone.

Rather than cancelling fireworks, why don't we ensure that Canada day celebrations properly reflect aboriginals and their essential place in Canada's past and present.
The same can be said for how we teach our history. We don't stop teaching about pre-confederation aboriginal history, we just make sure that we place emphasis on both pre and post-confederation history and the wrongs that were committed (and continue to be committed).
Just the same as we don't stop teaching about the railway in Canada and the benefit it's been to this country, we continue to teach it while giving equal acknowledgement that it was built by exploiting Chinese immigrants and sending them down tunnels with dynamite on their back.
We also continue to teach about John A. MacDonald as the father of confederation, while acknowledging that he held views that are gross when viewed through 21st century glasses, and that he had a significant role in some of our countries worst episodes.
This whole cancelling anything that may trigger a minority of aggrieved individuals is not reasonable accommodation.

How long before there is a movement to end Canada Day? There is a movement to do away with Australia Day in that country. It’ll happen here too.

Oh totally. In the absence of religion, nationalism is almost a necessity. It's just sad that we need that instead of just caring about other people because they're people.

Yeah, my comment was about a beer commercial. I stand by what I said and used that simply for emphasis.

Man, this thread has it all, though, doesn’t it?
- A pointless show of wokeness
- People freaking out about their “culture” and giving into wokeness because of… fireworks being cancelled
- People quoting old Molson Canadian ads as a show of their national pride
- Random mentions of the soviet union

When my dog gets scared by lightning....its bloody hilarious. Likewise when it humps things like my kids. We all laugh our asses off. There is no way people don't like fireworks because of their dog, that's ridiculous.

You know who else had excessive national pride? Nazis.
There, now you can add it to the list.

The whole, cancel everything Canada in the name of reconciliation might just end up backfiring and creating a strong counterculture of people starting to become 'ultra-Canadian,' not because they were particularly nationalistic beforehand, but because it beats the hell out of whatever world this has devolved into where decisions like this are made.

100%
I think if you asked 10 indigenous people what they thought of the topic, I'd bet all 10 of them would find the fireworks the least obnoxious part about Canada Day.
