That's why I mentioned Tre coveting Philly. I doubt it, but my understanding is it's not too disimilar than the Toronto situation owned by a cable company.

Oh man would that be a huge downgrade.

If Treliving were to decide to leave, I’d bet the replacement would be Lombardi or Futa

Lombardi is in the Flyers organization I wonder how much input he has had. Highly doubt he wants to come to Canada, and I wonder if the relationship with Sutter is soured after he tried to fire him but was blocked by LA ownership.
Listening to Futa on the Sportsnet he also falls into that the game has passed him by type of guy.

Did the Flyers use Chatgpt to write this press release?

I really agree that Kadri and Huberdeau need to be separated. Kadri is a puck hog.

This is terrible news for me. Damn. And you're right, Pat doesn't speculate about stuff like this. Dark times ahead as I believe Tre is a top GM in the league.

IMO Treliving has a ton of options when his contract expires. I think he's pretty well regarded in the league. Whether or not the first season has worked out, people thought he worked a miracle with the Tkachuk trade. And he has time to pick and choose - it's not like he's poor and needs an immediate job. I could see him in a POHO role in Nashville if they think Trotz needs a hand. I wouldn't be surprised if NYI moves on from Lou soon.

I think Treliving is the perfect assistant GM. A guy that hits the phones hard and is a good contract negotiator. He has a poor grasp of head coaches and is a fan of the outdated approach of building out from the blueline first. It seems like two decades of Flames teams with stacked defense groups that never pay off because the team is always deficient at center or wing. Having a solid top 4 is important but seems a like a good defense in today's NHL is a strong offense. He will get another GM gig for sure if he leaves the Flames but his success elsewhere will depend on how much he's learned and is willing to change from his approach in Calgary.

I think the biggest problem is that the Flames aren't an organization that people are scrambling to be a GM for.
There are 32 jobs in the league, and a very average GM by almost all metrics is about to willingly resign from his role.
He's pretty much the best fans can realistically hope for.

It's not often GM's resign from a role where they are under contract to go to another team. You either have to go through the retread route of previous GM's that aren't currently acting as a GM or hope to unearth the next great GM that's currently acting as a an assistant GM and waiting for their first kick at the can as GM. Basically how the Flames ended up with Treliving.

This team desperately misses the role Ken King created for Brian Burke. We had that layer of communication from management to ownership.
He would be really helpful in a season like this and all the tensions between everyone.

I would add the free agent signings as a negative also for him, Neal,Brouwer,Raymond,Rooney, etc. Even Markstrom as good as he was last year is not paying off, hasnt been a 6 million goalie in 2/3 years.

Aside from Rooney, who is pretty inconsequential, you are going back 5 years to find bad FA signings.
More recently, Ryan, Toffoli, Tanev, Coleman, Gudbranson, Lewis, Frolik, Engelland were fine. Any GM has misses. The only significant UFA miss so far IMO is Neal. The others were either small and buriable or short term. Or both.

Toffoli was a trade, and the jury is out on Coleman. I personally think he is overpaid and we could get much better value for his salary than a 3rd line, 15 goal scorer. But yes, I agree, he has had some good FA signings alongside the poor.
Tre's biggest weakness has been coaches. I feel the last five years could be summarized as unmet potential (aside from last year and even then we were outcoached against the Oilers)

The Flames were paying for Brouwer's buyout up until the end of last season.

I don't think the buyout was the big issue its that the problem has compounded itself into bigger cap hits and worse players Neal and now Lucic. Hopefully Lucic leaves and ends the Brouwer tree.

Simply meant that Brouwer was a significant miss by Treliving.
