Overpayment for Hronek, IMO.

This is puzzling move to say the least. Never saw anything special about Hronek. And now he has the Nucks by their nuts regarding his upcoming extension. Total overpay.

What the ####. What a foolish move. Just continually spinning their wheels . The last time they were dedicated to a rebuild was the late 90s and they managed to be a great team. This is just a disheartening #### you to a city and their fanbase. Maybe it is the universe saying don't ruin your city over a sports team..

I count 17 teams below NYI in the standings, so this is probably a 2023 1st.

They have played 64 games do most every team at 64 points or better has a chance to catch them with games in hand. So that's 7 teams including Detroit. Granted only 1-2 might win all the games in hand.

But if it's top 12 protected good odds it will be this year and it's likely in the 14 to 18 range.

Dumbest trade this deadline by far

I'm surprised by all the Hronek hate. I wouldn't trade a 1st in this draft for him, but he's an excellent player. Defensive play is coming along.

It’s just an odd move in the Vancouver cycle and for where they are sitting right now.

I don’t think anyone in here hates Hronek. He’s a solid D-man as you said. It’s just the Nucks are a franchise that should realistically be getting as many futures as they can, not trading them away

Exactly. This is a fair price for the 5th overall WAR d-man in the league - one spot back of Quinn Hughes - because what you are buying is at best a top pairing RD (which is what he is this year) and at worst a good 2nd pairing RD at age 25 under contract. This is what you pay for that.

But that player doesn't take the Canucks from dumpster fire, bottom of the NHL status to top 12 team. It makes them finish maybe 20th next year rather than 25th.

It's exactly like the JT Miller deal - 8m is perfectly fine for a big PPG winger who can win faceoffs and run your power play. He'd get that in UFA. But it's a terrible contract to have if you are in the position the Canucks are in.

They really have taken over the "laughing stock Canadian franchise" mantle from the Oilers (who of course inherited it from the Leafs).

Is there really not one person in Vancouver or Calgary front office that ask “what are we doing, though?”

I suspect the answer in Vancouver's case is that the GM asks that, and the owner says, "we're trying to make the playoffs next year at any cost".

... in Calgary's case I have no idea.

Let’s just be grateful that Brad isn’t doing anything stupid this trade deadline by the looks of it

But the point isn't to go from the bottom to the top in one trade, I'm sure they will be tinkering with this line up for the next year or so and then we will see where they are at, Vancouver's d suck's, they are trading for better dmen, makes a lot of sense.

There are. And then the owner fires them.
