My kid isn't even here yet, and with all the prep work the wife and I are doing, yeah I won't have time once he's born to be a hardcore fan anymore.
Resign yourself to mediocrity, the flames in my entire adult life have never won a presidents trophy, stanley cup or first overall draft pick. Odds are this year will be no different either. Stop paying for TV subscriptions, illegally stream the games you want to see and you'll be less invested.

Getting older with less time to waste…. If the game is boring I’ll watch it on the PVR in the morning for something to do. When they play the Oil I’ll watch the first period then the rest in the morning. Don’t need the stress before bedtime lol

It's just a game at the end of the day. 1 team out of 32 wins and as long as it isn't Edmonton Vancouver Winnipeg Ottawa Montreal or Toronto who cares just enjoy the games or don't and move on.
Best advice I ever read about this, why are you stressing about something where the maximum reward for you will be watching adults skate around with an oversized Cup

i think the greatest reward from the games is how it has the power to bring the city together and create a sort of festive atmosphere for a while
since Calgary is a place that's in frequent need of that sort of comraderie on the streets, it's always great to see it happen when the Flames make a run
that's the bulk of what I miss, really
so the chance of that happening again is what I'm rooting for in the regular season
games with a lot of drama and comebacks are exciting, but these days that's hardly every game, that's once in a batch of games
with the game getting softer and heated rivalries simmering out, the games less and less live up to the hype of them
its becoming less rational to be as invested as we are given the quality of the product nowadays
with uneven, unpredictable officiating it also screws with the organic progression of the games
media swooning over players and pushing storylines rather than just evaluating the games as they have unfolded also makes sitting through them less appealing
and now betting ads
sports, or at least the nhl, should be easier than ever to not take seriously

For me certain life situations happened, ones that happen to everybody at some point during life and it made me realize that certain *hit just doesn't matter all that much at the end of the day. Sure during the playoffs I'll be emotional and into it but after the game it takes me 15 minutes to be over it, in my younger days that wouldn't be the case. Its also allowed me to call it the way I see it vs. blindly thinking they can do no wrong.
Kids and pets. Especially once said kids start community hockey, because you care more about watching them than you do about overpaid millionaires. And I’m saying that as a flames fan for 40 years.
This is an interesting thread.
I remember back in 04, lucky enough to go to every game that year (first year as a season ticket holder with 5 friends, couple years out of Uni), it was awesome. The loss (it was in btw) had me "almost" in a depression, miserable for months - and realized how stupid it was one random day to be that invested.
I moved to Toronto, and some friends there are huge Raptor fans (I don't like basketball at all) and watched the playoffs with them. They win, we cheer and drink - and the next day everything is back to normal. Had a conversation with one of the guys, like "how does it feel"? "No different" - he was happy they won, but nothing changes in your life.
Investing your time, energy, passion, emotion, well being etc. into something that gives you little to nothing in return is not worth it(comment for the original poster).
Try to enjoy the game again, and don't care so much about the wins.
For me, I used to be one of those die hards. When my team lost it ruined my night. Then one night the Flames lost and again my night was ruined, I was in a bad mood for the rest of it, cursed them and had trouble sleeping.
The next morning I came on here and someone went to Cowboys after the game and Kipper and few other guys showed up and were having a blast. After seeing that I thought, if these guys are out having fun after a loss, why am I letting it ruin my nights. A loss literally affects their livelihood but they are out having fun. After that I figured if it does not affect them, then it should not affect me.

I just don't even watch when they are sucking or mediocre. I haven't watched a lot of hockey in the last few years...what is the point of watching disappointment? I'll tune back in if they go on a bit of a run, but right now? No thanks.
As I get older it gets harder to take seriously the exploits of 25 year old men.
Some of the teams I followed became very successful - it feels good, but not for long.
Live music rarely lets you down like sports can.
This is me and movies. It's like I could watch something off my 'haven't seen but should list' that I will likely enjoy or I can take a crap shoot with the Flames.

To me it's just an opportunity to watch the top 500 players in the world play a game that I fell in love with since I was around 3. Growing up in the Maritimes, I've probably only been to a handful of NHL games before moving here 3 years ago.
Plus "win or lose on the food" (PL STH food vouchers )
I found getting into fantasy hockey helped. Now I follow players on multiple teams and there's always a team or player to feel good about. I have Draisaitl on my Keeper team and it makes any Edmonton success slightly less painful
I used to be so emotionally invested in the team and my mood could change if they won or lost that night. I remember being so down in the dumps when they had that huge slide in 09/10 which was followed by the Phaneuf and Jokinen trades. I always thought Iggy was going to get it done here in Calgary and I didn’t want to believe he and Kipper were not going to win the cup. I was in my early-mid 20’s during 04-10 years and in University and just starting work. I was living a far less stressful life so I was just more emotionally invested
For the past several I have removed the negative emotions from watching the game. The highs are not what they used to be when they won but the lows are really minimized. My job and family are far more important and impact my mood more than how my favorite sports team does.
I was really bummed for a night when they lost to the Oilers last year but had it been 10-15 years ago I would have been angry for likely weeks/months. I see what fans post on Twitter and this forum and I just don’t get it anymore. Maybe they were just like me when I was younger but I can’t see a 35+ person who has kids or a stressful job caring that much or getting so angry about the team winning or losing.
