Who cares, honestly. Not to be crass. But with all the issues on this team, this thread was silly from the start. Cecil put it best - A post and missing the post by a mm outside are the same thing - a miss. It's especially true in todays NHL where goalies have the net locked down by inches to the point where scoring top corner and hitting the post are two different things, one being way easier than the other.

This kind of thread gets made on a message board for a team that plays a system that plays for stats and ends up out of the playoffs. Overload possession and shots and you win games!!!! Nope.

I'm excited for advanced stats and where they'll end up and follow them, but I'm really not convinced of where they're at in the NHL right now.

Hockey was always going to be the hardest, with MLB being the easiest, but too many latched on as soon as the shift in pro sports started.

A post in hockey means nothing, in reality. Even if you had the goalie beat, the fact is, the shot wasn’t going in. Sure, it may have gone in after the clank, but it didn’t.

Yep, with goalies now and their equipment, it is literally down to the inch in terms of beating them. You have inches to score when you're going close to post/crossbars and if you hit the red, you missed scoring.

None of this "he beat the goalie but not the post" nonsense. That's silly, especially with the razor thin margins on finding space to score in the current NHL.

I don't care if theyre lacking talent & chemistry

They've still been probably the most unlucky group in recent memory.

I have officially dubbed this this season of 'Amonte.'

The Spirit of Flames Great Tony Amonte has come back to haunt this team and guide their shots firmly into the posts of their adversaries.

When the Flames miss the playoffs and the team skates off the Saddledome ice for the last time on Garbage Bag day the last player on the ice who takes the last shot on the net before leaving for the dressing room for the season will hit that post and that 'ping' shall echo in the empty Saddledome as the lights are slowly turned off on the 2022-23 season.

For upcoming is the long off-season of our discontent.

This is where I'm at. Hitting a post does not mean nothing. It means you had a scoring chance significant enough you could've probably scored on. You hit that many and you're simply unlucky.

You lose that many in OT and you've been unlucky. These things tend regress to the mean and I think it would return to normal next year. Not sure they'll get that chance

There is no more perfect Icon for this season.

The man who hit every post in the league as often and possible and slunk out stage left doing the helicopter.

Thats it folks. Thats the Calgary Flames 2022-23 season.

I didn’t read the thread. So unpopular opinion;I do not believe in “luck” in hockey. Talented players can score between the pipes they are better at picking the spots. Players who aren’t as talented will more than likely hit the post more often.

I guess probability is the better word as I don't believe in "luck" either. But skill alone doesn't explain why Mangiapane can score 35 one year and 18 the next. Or Markstrom have a Vezina caliber season one year and awful the next, etc

I agree for the most part. However we see it over and over in pro sports where a player has a career year and can never bounce back from it.

Players leading the league in posts this season:

Trochet
Toffoli
McDavid
Pettersson
Terry

does that sound like a list of players who 'aren't as talented'?

You hit a lot of posts when you take a lot of shots. Some seasons it goes in more often, and you have a higher shooting percentage. Other seasons, it doesn't go as well and your shooting percentage is lower.

Why is that difficult to understand?
